OCFlip - It turns out that halva is incredibly easy to make. Forget traveling about. Get up half an hour early on a Saturday and you will be enjoying it by Saturday afternoon. It appears to take the same amount of time to prep as it would to go out to the store, buy it, and come home.

If you're near the old part of Tustin, Laxmi may carry it.

Janet, my little boy and I just love the "new Target." They have a very cool toy selection; first and only place that we have found Rocket toys (from the Little Einstein videos). And their food selection is wonderful. I have to admit, I really like the District. I was itching to move to the North Irvine area because of the new Woodbury shopping center but I am liking Westpark more and more...where else can you walk across the street from your rental townhouse to a great Target, and then hop in the car, drive the back way (take Warner the whole way instead of Barranca) to the District and hit a brand new mega Target? The Winery looks like it will be a good hangout, and of course ya gotta love Peets Coffee! (and Whole Foods, TJ Maxx, etc. etc. etc.) Jeez, I sound like an ad for Vestar/Tustin Legacy. Sorry!

I heard it will stay open - how long no one knows.

Did you see the Register article a few months back?

I'm sure I will butcher this, but I think it was along-the-lines that OC could support 60 Target stores, where we now have around 28 (?).

BK - Perhaps I will be able to talk to you somewhat intelligently about it. I just ordered it from Amazon and should have it by Friday. Hopefully, I will find time to finish it soon. I've been reading a short book on Japanese history for three months now!

ISM - If it works for you, it works for you. The handful of times I've been over to The District, I have been unimpressed with the traffic circulation. I keep waiting to get hit by another car who either doesn't understand or is too impatient to deal with a four way stop.

The best thing about The District so far: Warner cuts through. Getting to work, I can take it around the backside of Target, south on Von Karmann, and right on Alton. The old way was straight down Alton. The light at Murphy isn't sync'd with the one immediately after it on Jamboree. The light at Von Karmann takes stupid pills on certain mornings. Road-rage drivers on Paseo Westpark go out of their mind -- Something about two lane roads brings their inner asshole to the surface.

I avoid all of this thanks to the new route.

ELS, the traffic in there is indeed quite screwy. It's best to dive bomb your chosen store from the six lane perimeter road that connects to Von Karman. The traffic flow near the BBQ place is awful.

IrvineSingleMom,

Yeah - I think The Winery looks fantastic too!

And don't forget the AMC14. We've been to it every Friday since it opened. Very clean and nicely designed - and they have a concierge!

Someone said a few weeks back that The District doesn't have a gathering area, but it most certainly does.

It has many food establishments, and even has a bowling alley. I'm betting that will go-over huge.

Hahaha!

I have a bet going with my husband on that.

He say's its residential, I say it's an Inn.

The only clue (outside of the name) is that the window coverings all match.

I googled it... It's an affordable housing project. Studios at ~$550, max income $28k. Heck I could've lived there in 2002 when I was unemployed (with $15k in the bank) and nobody would rent to me. I didn't know about the place.

Hmmm.

I have no issues with affordable housing, but it's an eyesore.

Maybe someone will step-in and tidy it up.

Yeah, it's a touch sketchy. Walking down Warner to the District is something almost nobody does. It's an ugly, noisy, smelly walk, with the Irvine Inn as the pinnacle.

I've never had a problem around there... Knock on wood.

Pink and green? I don't think so. Beige maybe? It's on the corner of Warner and the S/B Jamboree off-ramp. Two-story motel looking thingy.

Yeah, I think we're talking about the same thing. Its purpose explains its placement. You know, we wouldn't want to "mainstream" the low income, or anything.

Irvine Inn is for singles with a certain level of income, can't be too low, can't be too high either. I believe they are all studio-type of rooms with utilities paid, even cable. 24-hour security. Rents depend on income, from around $450 to $600 a month. There is a waiting list.
