I think it's time we place our wagers on whether or not Irvine will ever debut a cronut shop.

Argument for: Trendy.

Against: Too reminiscent of a doughnut shop.

Any bets? My prediction: No cronut shop will cometh. Perhaps they will be carried alongside other items at existing bakeries.

I've been hearing a lot about cronuts lately and, finally, over the weekend I saw them being sold in the bakery section of the grocery store for the first time. I am purposely not going to try one because I do not want to love them.

what grocery store is this? ive been wanting to try these but dont know where they are sold

Probably Ralphs? I like that place as the bakery is in the front of the store so you get a nice bakery smell as you enter.

Donut stores already make croissants so it would be easy enough for them to add this to their selections until the fad fades.

You can probably find them closer to you at the Walmart in Irvine. That's where I found them that day I went to the Walmart bakery in L.F. after my boy's birthday cake was fubar'd at Ralph's. However, they are not the true "Cronuts" by Ansel's bakery. He has that name registered and has no plans on mass producing them. They are a knock-off. I didn't catch the name but the knock-offs elsewhere are going by names like "doissant", etc.

Btw, I've got to give credit to Walmart's bakery. I've only been inside a Walmart a handful of times in my life. I'm more of a Target lover myself. But this is the second time I've gone to them for an emergency cake and they have come through beautifully. I was pretty impressed because they have really creative products that I never see at other stores! For ex, instead of a boring sheet cake, I got my boy this cute Oreo tall mini cake surrounded by coordinating cupcakes all around it. It had whipped frosting instead of the default butter-cream most stores use. (Pic below.) Other shoppers were talking to me at the store when I had it in my cart, inquiring about the cake and commenting on it. Also they are the only place I've seen that has cupcake cakes with fewer than 24-36 cupcakes. I actually found some pre-made with a dozen cupcakes. And they have giant choc. chip cookies / cookie cakes like you see at Mrs. Fields with a fluted frosting ring around it. They even have icecream cake cupcakes! I have never seen those before! It's still not enough to make me shop at Walmart regularly. However, next time I need a special bakery item, I will skip the other stores and become a "People of Walmart".

Did anyone trademark "doburger"?

Iho, I would have assumed you've had a "Luther burger".http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luther_Burger

It's a Krispy Kreme doughnut, split and grilled, used as a bun for a hamburger. Several places have their own take on it.
That's what I was referring to... but no... never had one nor a desire to... seems too messy.

I donut believe you!!!  :P You love food, the messier the better. I've been paying attention. I do, however, believe you've never had "one".  :)

Actually... I don't like messy food... I use tons of napkins.

The idea of a glazed donut with fried beef is not appealing at all.

just went to fusion tea bar in tustin and picked one of these up. still three left! they are great. used a fork/knife to eat half of it when i got home and when i was cutting into it the outside was a little hard/crunchy so i thought the inside was going to be dry, nope. this thing is like heaven. very moist on the inside and a good crispiness on the outside.  way better than any doughnut, by far.

$4.50, kind of steep since you just get one, but its got to have close to 1,000 calories so you probably dont want to eat more than 1 any way. Good find PS9.
