Chinese, where would you live?

@chrispy. The steamed dumplings are great and much more flavorful than Din Tai Fung. However, Nan and Joes are still better having better texture.

well I did say southern cali... I am surprised you were still able to get steamed dumplings after 6pm...

@Gld2, You must have gone to the original DTF the "hole in the wall" location. 4 years ago they designed their own building modeled after Richard Meier's modern aesthetics. The interior is modern, spacious and clean line. There too you can view into the Mexican fish bowl.

I told them I drove all the way up there from Irvine having heard of their reputation. I agree to write a post a review  on a food related site if I like the flavor. Their nazi attitude changed to a much courteous tone after that. I told them if I like them I will be dining there frequently for the years to come. They agreed to offer me  their specialties.

LIES! I doubt those dumpling nazis would give you more than 5 seconds to hand them your order. Their beef stew noodle is pretty damn good also (the restaurant to the right of it also has awesome beef stew noodle but Taiwanese style), that's what most ppl get when they run out of the popular items.

Their attitude was lousy until they heard I drove a long distance to try them out. They were actually quite honored and were willing to try harder to keep at least 2 customers happy. We were their last customers and were not too happy to wait for us to leave after 8pm. It is mostly a lunch spot. The place is tiny and not a place to impress your date.

We went to Luscious again today and everything was out except for 4 items. We were given 15 minutes to eat or we would be kicked out. This was the Chinese soup nazi. the restaurant must close by 2 pm. We threw the menu back at the nazi and went next door instead of Phoenix across the driveway. To my surprise the dumpling place next door was quite good.

Not just dumplings and but whole lot of other things. You don't know until you miss it. The grass is always greener on their otherwise. SGV may not be as nice as Irvine but there are plenty of things there to be liked. For instance the research library at Huntington.

you guys must like dumplings a lot.. driving from irvine to san gabriel...

How did I miss this thread?  I must drive to get dumplings...

DTF, nice abbreviation :), is crazy busy now... the older location opens at 10am on weekends now.. the other side 10:30am and there is still a wait.. I still like their food, never disappoint.. Get the bean sprout/bean curd appetizer, really opens up your appetite.  Beef stew, pork chop, shanghai noodles are all pretty tasty too.. I been to the original DTF in Taiwan when I was younger, remember walking through the steaming towers of baskets in the entrance, lovely aroma... really get the taste buds going... maybe they should open up the Mexican fish bowl here to get the aroma thru the restaurant..

We can not export all Mexicans from Santa Ana to work in Irvine. Santa Ana is getting safer by the days when the Mexicans are busy building homes in Irvine. A DTF fishbowl will completely drain Santa Ana's criminal pool and leaving no one behind to committing crime.

i grew up in Rowland Heights, parents live in Diamond Bar, I currently live/work in La Jolla and i'm looking to move to Irvine

Are you planning to commute to La Jolla?  Just curious.  We were just there over Memorial day weekend.  Lovely area.

La Jolla, in SD? that's where I plan to retire... UCSD graduate here... actually transferred from UCB cause of the beach/weather.

Not commuting! It's too far to do that. But this also means I'm the the market for a SFH in Irvine. My first baby is due in October :). I love la Jolla but my family is in diamond bar and irvine. I'm going to need their support when the baby comes.

Congrats on the new addition.  Next time you're in Irvine, make the rounds at the Montessori schools and put your soon to be new addition on the wait lists.  Even with family help, you might later on decide to put him/her in preschool and some of the schools have literally a 2-3 yr wait list.  Good luck on the search for a new home and keep us updated on what you finally decide on.

Congrats on the addition. Take OCgasman's advice and do this asap... I have a 19 month old and another on the way.. all but turtle rock will allow you to be on their waiting list with out a fee. TR Preschool requires $150 non-refundable fee just to get on their list (I skipped them).

Wow!! Great advice! I never would've knew I had to put my baby on a wait list for school before she was even
born! Lol

Crispy, when are you guys expecting your new bundle of joy?

Jan 21st.. Dragon baby.. we have a Tiger already... hope the Chinese saying Dragon/Tiger fight isn't true..

I think maybe you are not a Chinese. I don't think a Chinese will like to live in Beverly Hills.

If I can choose freely, no work restriction, Arcadia will be the #1 choice.
Then will be: Rowland Heights, Irvine, and others.
