Can someone tell me what that freakin smell is around Sand Canyon and the 5?

During the day or night or day and night?. If it is at night then it is the smell of the Eucalytus grove along the edge of Sand Canyon. If it is during the day then it must be PANDA looking for house listings around the area.
 
Take a left (or right) onto Marine way...you'll see why...big piles of compost....AND even LARGER piles of money being burnt over the fake mini-park...which no-one can use. :lol:

PadreBrian is probably correct above. If you use Google Maps and check out the area just northwest of runway 7L at the old El Toro Marine base, you can see a number of north-south running piles. These appear to be compost windrows, where organic matter is allowed to decompose and make a quite good fertilizer. Recycling as opposed to disposal in a landfill, as mandated by California solid waste regulations. The facilities that I am familiar with (not this one) are ... umm... quite fragrant.

I lived by a garbage landfill in NY and it didnt smell nearly as bad.





This smells like a burning chemical caustic smell...

I drive up the 133 every day. When you cross over the 5, you smell the compost piles. It is a pretty strong odor, particularly on days when they are turning it over.

how do I avoid buying/renting downwind of that putrid stink????
 
It really was bad yesterday. I had an appointment over there and I met graph for lunch. I kept thinking that it reminded me of when someone spilled a milkshake in the back of my high school car and it didn't get cleaned up enough...add desert heat and a few weeks and you get a smell similar to that part of Irvine yesterday.
 
Boy, am I gonnna get some grief here.

I have noticed that the lower elevation areas in Irvine smell like raw sewage. I have speculated for years that the sewer pipe running parallel to the 405 and draining off that main are not big enough to handle the flow.

Personally, I will never buy a home in the lower elevation areas of Irvine because of this reason.

I haven't looked at any topo maps lately, but the smelly areas seem to within a quarter mile of the 405.
 
there is no smell ! it's Irvine, It's perfect ! prestine, clean and smell free. It's Irvine, the center of the universe.

Well, for you un believers, try hanging around the 5 and Sand Canyon. You'll smell it for a 1/4 mile from there. I would say 3 times a week you can smell it and its bad.
