those piles on the right?

Ummm... in case no one has noticed those large patches of land that look like farmland around there, well... that is farmland. They grow food on that land. Yes, can you believe there are still farms in Irvine? That smell is this thing they add to the soil to fertilize it, called manure. Trust me, go to garden section of Lowes or Home Depot and find the big bag of manure, put your nose within a millimeter of it and take a deep sniff. You will have fond memories of Sand Canyon and the 5.

Either you need to do more gardening, or you need to get out of OC more often. Maybe even take a trip up to Fresno with No_Vas, and he can show you the spots where it smells really, really bad. Or you could just go to Norco, but they have grapes in Fresno, and grapes are cool, nothing is cool in Norco.

uh ya. so smart guy, why does it stink 3/7 days of the week. They fertilize it and they put manure in the ground 3 days a week. You don't fertilize it that often.... smart guy....you sure it is the fertilizer.

Yes, I am sure. I have been working down there a lot, almost every day. There are several patches of land for different types of food that they grow, and things grow at different times of the year, so nothing is being planted exactly at the same time. Also, as soil gets older, and it requires more nutrients to grow healthy plants, then more fertilizer is required and more often.

It has smelled worse lately because they recently replanted there in the past two months. Maybe try paying attention to your surroundings and you might see what is actually going on. BTW, do you know what manure smells like? Because if you do, then common sense would tell you that is exactly what it is.

I know when I've added soil amenders that include manure the whole area reeks for a good week. For home gardening, try E.B Stone organic compost. It doesn't have the poop in it, so it doesn't stink and everything I've planted with it has really thrived.

Yeah... you're right. It's probably the decomposing bodies of the aliens that Donald Bren shot down with his giant laser. I dunno, but maybe, just maybe that farm land isn't organic, and uses chemical fertilizers as well as compost in the soil. Because if you look at the satellite shot, the space for the farm land is HUGE! And call me crazy for thinking that might be the cause of the smell, or maybe I'm not the crazy one...

[quote author="Astute Observer" date=1227433534]I can tell graphrix is a city boy who never been to the mid west or drive further than Burbank. I would say the farm land is kind of cute.</blockquote>
I think that was the same size as my backyard in Massachusetts. %-P
