Can I send my kids to IUSD schools using my rental home address?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Because your renter is help paying the prop taxes for you.
If it is your 2nd home and sits empty, then you have a point.

Also, how can I be stealing an education for my kids?  I'm standing here and saying that I own a property in Irvine, and pay property tax and mello roos for the betterment of the city and community.  So I am paying my dues fair and square just like anybody.

However, I decide to buy a home in Lake Forest and live there with my family and register him in Irvine.  I don't see how I'm "stealing" tax payers money in any way.  It's not like I'm double dipping where the government has to pay IUSD and Lakeforest USD each.  It gets paid based on a per-enrollment basis and a child can only be enrolled in one school at a time.

But somehow, somebody created this golden sacred rule that you're supposed to live close to your K-12 school and must enroll him zoned to your "primary" home.

Well sh**, let's think about some strange scenarios:

1. Divorce moms and dads who share 50% joint custody.  If the boy is living in Irvine between Mon-Wed, and Lake Forest, he lives with his mom Thursday-Sunday, which district is he alloewd to or not allowed to enroll in?

2. A super rich rapper family buys 12 houses in every city in OC.  He's so gangster that he lives in each home 1 month out of the year.  All his home is considered "primary".  What school district would this child be enrolled to?  Irvine, Tustin, Orange, Santa Ana, Mission Viejo ????

Keep in mind, the rapper is rich. (kayne west rich).  So mortgage and property tax are all up to date and current.

The answer is: none of the above, send your kid to private school where the elite rich kids go to

@Magic:

In both your cases, the child/parent is technically a "resident" in Irvine whether it be 3 days a week or 1 month a year.

In your rental case, the residents for your Irvine home is the family you rented it to, so they have the "residency" requirement that IUSD asks for, not you. They are actually the ones paying the taxes, MRs and HOA (unless you are taking a loss on the rent) so it should be their benefit, not yours.

What you choose to do is up to you, but by definition of what IUSD requires, it's for proof that you "reside" in Irvine.

As for how your "cheating" affects the system, well, it basically adds more students to classes that shouldn't be there. You can extrapolate from there additional costs to the school system.

Actually, it's the opposite. It's not that residents have an obligation to the local school. It's that they have an obligation to serve the students within the school's area (which is the kids residing in your rental home). You do not need to enroll at the school you are zoned to. Parents can apply for an intra-district transfer, a.k.a. open enrollment. Now, in your case, to operate on the up & up, you would apply for an inter-district transfer, assuming it meets attendance agreements.

Magic you knew the "fact" which was you can't send your future kids to schools in Irvine when you live in Lake Forest... You just wanted to know if you could lie and get a way with...

That statement is accurate.  I'm not insulted or hurt.  Why?

Cause there's just too many of us yellow people I know that are doing this.  Whether it's in San Gabriel, San Marino, Arcadia, Cerritos, etc.  That's why I wanted to see if anyone here knows someone who are doing it and are getting away with it in Irvine.

Last but not least, my fiance is totally cool with it.  In fact, she's a strong supporter of it.  Why pay $460/sq.ft. and MelloRoos when you can just pay $380sq.ft/no mello roos and go to the same school.  ;D

How do you think people get ahead in China?  or how China Millionaires are made daily?  By scraping by selling 50 cent dumplings?  Only by cheating the system, the people, the health of the environment, cutting corners, etc.  Okay, a little off topic.

Wow, I'm  hoping that I won't have neighbors like you. I hope Tustin School District attracts less of this kind of people with the cheater mentality.
And not all Asian people are like this by the way.

Judgment aside, I can tell you that IUSD always seems to find out at some point if a family is not truly a resident of Irvine.  It is highly unlikely they would press charges against you even though they are entitled to do so.  If you did get caught, you could always say you moved after enrolling and just wanted to finish up the year at the school.  My best friend at Uni (granted in the mid 90's) lived in Tustin Ranch and used a family friend's Irvine address to attend Uni.  Uni found out at the beginning of junior year but allowed but allowed my friend to graduate.  They may not be so lenient anymore though..google school enrollment fraud; here's one article that pops uphttp://www.usnews.com/education/articles/2009/03/02/schools-crack-down-on-boundary-hopping

Okay now for the judgment, you can't be a real Asian, man.  We all know real Asians, FOB or ABC, would never be caught dead living in Lake Forest.

LOL! My sister has lived in FR since 1995 and her next door neighbor is Asian.

Asians live everywhere.

My kids started at Irvine schools at Westwood Basics Plus (I think it might have closed.....they shared the parking lot with Sierra Vista). I volunteered in the office and never once heard of anyone looking into where people lived. (if you worked in Irvine you could apply for an interdistrict transfer).

We moved in Santiago Hills and noticed immediately they wanted to make absolute sure u lived in Irvine, sending out a teacher for a home visit, grilling the kids on where they lived. And sure enough kids were caught and sent packing soon as they found out. They had zero tolerance for people sneaking into their school from other districts. (they still had the work in Irvine thing, so not sure what they were so gung ho about....... maybe they had too many people trying to sneak into the Montesorri or Appas programs?).

My oldest daughter was in the first graduating class of Northwood High and I know for a fact she had friends who lived in Northpark there. Not sure how they did it, but they were never kicked out and no one seemed to be worried. We didn't have to show any proof of residence at that time........ just transfer from another IUSD school was good enough so maybe they just got in because Northpark was new and they were already in IUSD.

It's never a problem if a school is not @ capacity.

Sorry I meant.

It's only a problem if the school is @ capacity.

At that time, Northwood high was extremely under capacity and they open to anyone who wants to enroll there.  I also remember around that time, IUSD wants to move some students from Irvine High to Northwood and receive lot of resistance from both the parents and the students.

+1.  If there's no demands and school is under enrolled, they will enroll anyone with open arm.

They had to move from Irvine High to Northwood. That is where Northwood Pointe kids started. My daughter started as a Sophomore at Northwood High and there were only 9th and 10th graders there. Her freshman year was at Irvine High since Northwood was not yet open.

Some parents at Irvine High weren't happy because their friends who they grew up with for years were at Irvine High and some were concerned about the sports program (and scholarship potential) at Northwood since it was so new.
