Has anyone here ever thought of taking up smoking? I personally think smoking is disgusting. I tried to make it work a long time ago, very briefly. I could never get into it. BUT I hear it curbs cravings. I'm kind of tempted. I just can't get past the smoke getting into everything. It is so gross. At least pipes smell so much better. I don't know any women who smoke pipes, though.
Smoking is worse for your health than almost anything else... it may curb you appetite but it can give you cancer, emphysema, high blood pressure and a myriad of worse things than being slightly overweight.

Not to mention the smell and the stains.

Hey, who are you calling "slightly overweight"?  ;)

Well, if "somebody" was slightly overweight, you may be right, but what if they were morbidly obese? (I'm not morbidly obese, just giving an example.) Take this guy for example. He nearly killed himself due to an accident resulting from his weight. After six weeks in a nursing home (at the ripe old age of 30-something), he's starting to walk again. Sometimes I think it's less risky for someone like him to light up and drop some weight if only temporarily just to get back on his feet - literally! - if the other option is dying due to obesity.

Btw, that's David.

Things have been going really well since I posted my "confessional" above. I went to the grocery store last night with better habits in mind. I'm counting almonds as I type. Homer would be so proud.

I am!!

Wouldn't want to drink butter... I'm a bit irritated because even though I've been trying to cut down on food portions and have been more active lately than previous years... not losing any weight.

Not gaining either... but still need to drop some pounds. An injury has kept me from playing ball for a few weeks but hopefully I'll be back out there before Homer's kid starts dunking.

I don't think in-shape guys say they are overweight unless they really are... I'm not like qwerty where I can easily get back to fighting shape in 3 months.

I do blame age as a primary reason... but also my line of work and having kids. I used to play ball during the week, but with homework, I can't get out there at nights. If I had a physical job like construction or even a mail carrier route... I wouldn't be so blobby.

I don't think I'm Biggest Loser material... but I am a good deal over what I should weigh.

Well, there are a lot of blobby construction workers and mail carriers - lets not even go there :)
OK, if it's just some extra weight, start with kettlebells (SoCal and I use them as door stoppers, but you can actually use them to get in shape) It only takes a few minutes a day, and results are good too.

Kids and their commitments can zap you out. I barely go to the gym once a week :/ But try to eat as healthy as you can, and try to at least go out for a walk if not much. Irvine has some pretty good hikes you can do with little children. Get mildly active as a family?

That's the issue... I take a minimum 30min at least 3 or 4 nights a week... been doing so for the last year or so.

Although can't run or jump on, did a 1-hour casual bike ride with the family last weekend (love the weather here vs. John's Creek :) )... need to do more I guess.

You are on the right direction.. hang on, you will see results. Tweak the diet? Less carbs and more protein for a while? I did that last year when I wanted to lose a dress size. Down to what I think is good now, but there is no motivation to look like someone out of woman's health.. so back to eating my carbs. I was a strict diet for almost five weeks. Add some weight training also. Once or twice a week to start with?

Aww. There, there, Iho. No worries - we all love you no matter how big you is. You could be big as a house... wouldn't matter to us. It is a lot to juggle with all of those responsibilities. I think we can all sympathize with you because we are in a similar position. We are parents and we have busy lives just like you.

I've been trying to do better in my real life and my online life lately at not giving unsolicited advice... and nobody asked me... but CZ is absolutely right. If you won't listen to me, listen to her.  ;) The unfairness of it all is that you can exercise a great deal and not see results if the proper diet isn't in place. (Trust me. I've tried doing it that way!!) Take Chaz Bono for example. I watched this person in an interview recently. He/she said they work out very vigorously and consistently for a good period of time but simply can not lose the weight. It's very simple math. More calories are being consumed than are being burned off. The body needs a deficit to lose weight. I know you're not sold on the idea of counting calories but please just try it temporarily at least so you can get an idea of where you stand vs. what your body is burning. If you want to PM me, I will help you with an equation & some info that will guide you in how much to consume. It's science. It works every time.

Can't Mrs. Iho take over homework duty for a while so you can breathe a little more easily?? Maybe she can pre-pack some snacks and lunches for you or keep an eye toward lighter dishes when she's making dinner?

It's been a week. I'm still going but my motivation is dwindling. Maybe eating whatever I wanted  wasn't so bad to begin with. Why am I doing this again?

OK, I see mommy-tummy. Not good! I am logging what I eat from tomorrow, and all desserts will be only from Trader Joes. Costco for healthy food only. Back to diet! I will start walking soon too, it's not too cold to walk anymore.

BTW, Costco has Kale Chips. Bought a pack, finished a whole 3 serving thing, but not really much of guilt involved.

How's everyone's diet coming along?

I'm still eating the same food I ate before the baby came but have added in more Quinoa and Kale :)

Day 2 of clean eating for me. Just amped up the protein and cut down on the carbs, and started logging in MFP again. Keeps the munching on track :) And you know already.. walking too. I did lift some weights on Sunday morning- still sore. (it's been that long :( )

ETA: I reset my goals/ counter to make life easier ;-)
Homer: Six pack out yet?

Desserts from Trader Joe's are the best. Don't see how that would help with any weightloss though.

Portion control. I need a dessert everyday, but when I buy from Costco, it's hard to stop at one assorted mini of whatever it was.

No more updates? That can only mean one thing: you're off the wagon!

Lost 5 lbs. Fell off the wagon. It ran me over. Baked a carrot cake w/ cream cheese frosting yesterday. Ate it for breakfast. Made Swedish Meatballs w/ hot buttered noodles for dinner. Ate that, too. My earlobes feel fatter than normal. That's when I know it's gone too far. I need to hop back on if only fifty percent of the time at least. But first I need to un-learn how to cook and bake. Who can unteach me?
