A truly distasteful ad

<a href="http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=D9359KL80&show_article=1">The latest Obama campaign ad</a> mocks John McCain for computer illiteracy. It's well known that John McCain doesn't use computers. And it's also equally well known why John McCain doesn't use computers. The following is from the Boston Globe (owned by the NY Times of all papers)

<a href="http://graphics.boston.com/news/politics/campaign2000/news/McCain_character_loyal_to_a_fault+.shtml">excerpt from a John McCain article from 2000</a>

<em>McCain gets emotional at the mention of military families needing food stamps or veterans lacking health care. The outrage comes from inside: McCain's severe war injuries prevent him from combing his hair, typing on a keyboard, or tying his shoes. Friends marvel at McCain's encyclopedic knowledge of sports. He's an avid fan - Ted Williams is his hero - but he can't raise his arm above his shoulder to throw a baseball.</em>

This is truly a disgrace. Obama should be retract the ad and apologize immediately.

You know, if you just read the articles, I would have more respect for your constant whining. what of the following is incorrect:

<blockquote> "He admits he still doesn't know how to use a computer, can't send an e-mail, still doesn't understand the economy, and favors two hundred billion in new tax cuts for corporations, but almost nothing for the middle class," it says. It shows video of McCain getting out of a golf cart with former President George H.W. Bush and closes with a photo of him standing with the current President Bush at the White House. "After one president who was out of touch, we just can't afford more of the same."</blockquote>

why is that an objectionable advertisement?

because he is a veteran, despite his wanting to be president, he shouldn't have to understand the economy?

Steven Hawking has more severe disabilities than McCain and he's able to use technology. My grandmother uses the internet and she's 86.

Why does McCain get a pass by using the disability card? Or is he playing the old card now?

Apples and Oranges. Hawking would be a hatrack without technology to help him communicate. McCain can't use a keyboard, effectively making a computer unusable for him personally. If, like Hawking, he was unable to communicate via any other means, I'm sure McCain would get himself a blowtube rig too. This ad is like saying "Stevie Wonder can't read a newspaper or drive a car".

The whole McCain cant use a keyboard think is TOTAL BS.

If the man can sit. He can.

And the man can shake hands. He can.

So what is the physical impediment that keeps him from not being able

to type or use a mouse ? NOTHING.

Last article I read says he is learning. Finally.

http://blog.wired.com/27bstroke6/2008/09/obama-campaign.html

"McCain has been on the receiving end of widespread ridicule this year after admitting that he doesn't know how to use a computer, and for not using e-mail -- something that's now a part of everyday life for many Americans. He's subsequently said that he's learning."

We have no need for old wrinkly dudes who are out of touch with the modern world

as our President. Same with some creationist that can field dress a moose.

Go Obama.

Why don't you tell me more about the "old disability card"? I'm interested in learning how it works. Do you think that McCain was shot down intentionally so he could play the "old disability card"? In retrospect, his decision to turn down release from the "Hanoi Hilton" after a year and a half sounds suspicious. He obviously wasn't crippled enough to meet his ambitious plans for the future. Right?

The whole idea that one is qualified for President because he was a POW

does not seem to make much sense for me.

All the POW`s I ever heard of did not use the status for political gain.

<img src="http://www.bltserv.com/images/McCaincaged.gif" alt="" />

No one I know is saying that being a POW is a qualification for President.

Though I have heard that being a community organizer is all the qualification you need to be President a lot lately.

Fyi...Richard Branson doesn't use a computer either, he jots everything down in a little notebook, plus he's dyslexic which must make it harder and he's one of the greatest Businessmen of our time..

I'm not sticking up for McCain btw...I was just sayin..

It's not that he can't physically use a computer, it is that he doesn't <strong>know</strong> how to use a computer. Of course, the right wing is getting their panties all bunched up because there is some convoluted way to spin this as an unpatriotic attach against a POW.

Apparently no one on the Obama campaign (including the Chosen One himself) is savy enough to know how to use Google.

<a href="http://www.forbes.com/asap/2000/0529/053_print.html">Here is an article in Forbes from 2000 that addresses the supposed Luddite issues and McCain's disabilities</a>

excerpts from that article:

<em> This Internet-driven decentralization meant that the McCain campaign could organize down to a virtually block-by-block level for little cost. It allowed a thin organization to compete against the heavily financed and well-organized Bush machine, and it gave McCain campaign dollars an estimated 4-to-1 advantage over Bush greenbacks.

McCain himself was convinced early on that the Internet had to play a critical role in the campaign. Time and again it allowed him to leverage his money and his organization. "In the Virginia primary," McCain told me, "we needed a lot of petitions signed to get on the ballot. We had the form available to download off the Internet and got 17,000 signatures with very little trouble."

Ultimately, McCain realized he couldn't go the distance, but the message was clear to any political organization with hopes for the future. His Web team had played the Internet like a Stradivari. . . .

In certain ways, McCain was a natural Web candidate. Chairman of the Senate Telecommunications Subcommittee and regarded as the U.S. Senate's savviest technologist, McCain is an inveterate devotee of email. His nightly ritual is to read his email together with his wife, Cindy. The injuries he incurred as a Vietnam POW make it painful for McCain to type. Instead, he dictates responses that his wife types on a laptop. "She's a whiz on the keyboard, and I'm so laborious," McCain admits.

</em>

And all of this before Howard Dean was credited with being the first to utilize the internet in modern campaigns...

You really nailed me on that one ...

<i>They go on for me. I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon, getting on myself. I don?t expect to be a great communicator, I don?t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need ? including going to my daughter?s blog first, before anything else.</i>(John S. McCain)

A shot of McCain in a moment of POW induced immobility (using a Blackberry nonetheless).

<img src="http://www.rimarkable.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/08/john-mccain.jpg" alt="" />

McCain can't use a keyboard, because he's either too stubborn or too stupid. He graduated near last in his navy class...an admission only obtained by his father's influence.

How about air dropping McCain into Iraq if he's so pro-war.

McCain has no honor. He will lie, backstab, cheat, and say and do anything to get elected. He is a political parasite.

Winex, if you go back and read the text it says "He doesn't <em>know</em> how to use a computer . . . " Are you saying that being uncurious or disinterested is a <em>physical</em> disability? If so, please explain because I don't get it.

I would also suggest that your prostesting of computer use by the disabled based on the disability is misplaced because there are many adaptive products for all kinds of disabilities,<a href="http://abilityhub.com/keyboard/index.htm"> including keyboards.</a> Here is a <a href="http://abilityhub.com/keyboard/onehand.htm">one handed keyboard</a> that would likely work for him, if he were so inclined.

It just depends who you listen to. It seems that Winex and Nude are channeling Karl Rove on this one.

<i>"But they then say he doesn't ?send e-mail. Well, this is because his war injuries keep him from being able to use a keyboard. He can't type. You know, it's like saying he can't do jumping jacks,"</i> (Karl Rove)

If you track the news on this, suddenly around 9/12 McCain became incapable of operating a computer keyboard. Previously he was trying to learn how to use one (without pointing out that he physically can't use one). The distasteful part is not the ad itself, it's the right wing response linking it to McCain's POW injuries.

Eva, I must say this is one of the dumbest things I have seen you write.

The one handed keyboard that you linked to is designed for people with one hand. The last time I checked, John McCain had both hands. What John McCain doesn't have are good shoulders. I guess that's what happens when you break both arms and instead of getting treatment afterwards, you are hung by ropes tied around your arms for a few years.

I suppose that liberals would love to see him use something like what Stephen Hawking uses to control a computer with his mouth. You'd really love to mock him for wearing such an unsightly device, wouldn't you?

But if you can restrain your glee over and stop laughing at people who became disabled while fighting for your freedom to make a fool of yourself for just a moment, you will see the Forbes article that I linked to earlier. And if you read it, and if you understand ANYTHING about information systems, you will realize that strategic and tactical uses of information systems to minimize the cost of running a campaign demonstrates a much higher level of cognizance than is required for something simple like typing an email. For the physically able, writing an email requires nothing more than basic literacy. Using the power of information systems as a force multiplier in campaign strategies takes innovation and understanding. (Note: The article is from 2000. This was 4 years before Howard Dean got credit for being the first candidate to use the power of the internet in a modern campaign.)

You know Winex, I don't need to defend my respect for people with disabilities. If you knew my life story and the stories of those around me, I doubt you would make such an uninformed statement.

Before you jump on your high horse, you would also be wise to recall who it was that mocked injuries sustained by people in service to their country.

<img src="http://i.a.cnn.net/cnn/2004/ALLPOLITICS/08/30/gop.purple.hearts/story.bandaid.jpg" alt="" />

<a href="http://www.cnn.com/2004/ALLPOLITICS/08/30/gop.purple.hearts/">Those bandaids were handed out at the Republican National Convention</a> a mere four years ago. But I guess it is impossible for you to fathom that anyone not a Republican would fight for, be injured for, and die for their country.

Returning to McCain, it would appear that physical limitations are not the all-impossible problem you make them out to be.

<blockquote>Q: But do you go on line for yourself?

Mr. McCain: They go on for me. <strong>I am learning to get online myself, and I will have that down fairly soon,</strong> getting on myself. I don?t expect to be a great communicator, I don?t expect to set up my own blog, but I am becoming computer literate to the point where I can get the information that I need ? including going to my daughter?s blog first, before anything else.

Q: Do you use a blackberry or email?

Mr. McCain: No

Mark Salter: He uses a BlackBerry, just ours.

Mr. McCain: I use the Blackberry,<strong> but I don?t e-mail, I?ve never felt the particular need to e-mail.</strong> I read e-mails all the time, but the communications that I have with my friends and staff are oral and done with my cell phone. </blockquote>
