2011: Year of the iPad 2!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Sorry guys, I like to post more pictures & videos especially about VC but the long posts are definety more difficult on the phone...

IHO, btw.. are you sure something is wrong with your hardware?  Maybe a good factory reset will fix things...

I thought Fring and Qik were good VidConf apps on Android.

As for the i-egocentric view... it's probably more that they don't care... they know Android is out there but iOS works for them with less hassle. You can't fault them for that... it fits better with their lifestyle and choices.

Generally, Android or iOS isn't better... it's what works for the individual.

I forgot to address IrvCom's reference to apps on Android... while there are more free apps... they are also mostly ad-supported. In addition, because of the fragmentation of Android, it makes it difficult for a developer to program for Android because of differences in hardware... screen resolution alone is a big hurdle (which ICS is supposed to address). And because the impression on Android is the apps should be free, there is a smaller monetary benefit they are getting from Android so it may not even be worth the time to program around differences in versions, hardware capabilities or screen dimensions. This is another mistake Google made in trying to help developers monetize there efforts. That is something Amazon is trying to correct.

I read an article last week where the money Apple paid to 3rd party developers is more than what Google made in that same time frame. That's an amazing statistic. So while there may be more free apps on Android, there are more quality/polished apps on iOS. The strict tie-in with hardware and OS also makes iOS one of the best mobile gaming platforms out there.

So we learned on Monday that the...

Android tablet market grew to 27% in just ONE year...!

Here is another article for more clarification...
http://www.eweek.com/c/a/Mobile-and-Wireless/Android-Tablet-Share-Hits-27-Vs-iPads-67-Plot-139588/

I am simply amazed at that percentage, a year ago, Android had ZERO%... Seeing as how much BAD news were out there associated with Tablets and anything non-iPad related!  This is despite the lack of Tablet Apps, high prices, Fragmentation and multiple product confusion.

I can't wait to see when Android gets it's act together with ICS and all the manufacturers get serious and take what they've learned in 2011 and build upon that.  Will Apple sustain it's 73% iPad marketshare with the iPad 3?  I'm not sure, my guess is that Android like the smartphone market will continue to eat away at the tablet business when prices get good enough, when the software become more unified and the need become more apparent.

I don't even think this includes all the Kindle Fire numbers...  And with that... I saw my second Android Tablet at a Coffee Bean in Long Beach, the Asus Slider non-the-less...!

And Samsung's Galaxy Tab 7 lands on 11/17... IHO, tough decision between this & The TF2..

My next Phone...

Appreciate all of the data on the Samsung Nexus Prime or whatever they're going to call it, my likely next device (currently using Moto Droid v 1). Will be quite the upgrade. I think I'm still grandfathered via Verizon for unlimited data, but we'll see in November when the phone actually rolls out what I can do with my plan.

Here's a nice article on screen comparisons I found: http://www.phonearena.com/news/Samsung-Galaxy-Note-and-Galaxy-Nexus-sport-HD-Super-AMOLED---is-the-PenTile-matrix-bad-for-you_id23134

Funny you mention Nordstrom.  I just sat outside one in the car for like 45 min last weekend while Mrs. Star "just have to run in and grab something real quick, I'll be right out".  Yeah, right.
Wife Shopping <> Real Quick

That's like me saying I'll only be 5 minutes at Fry's or Best Buy.

Hey Pat...!  Glad do know you still read my threads...!  The reason why I love Android is because it's the poor man's smartphone.  Android is the polar opposite in terms  how Pretentious the iPhone can be.

Please see my post on Android Economics:http://www.talkirvine.com/index.php?topic=1509.msg25580;topicseen#msg25580

Android is what you find in the Ghetto's of LA, Long Beach and the hoods... I would honestly be afraid if I was waiting around the Blue Line metro stations with an iPhone and a MacBook Air.

I don't have a second thought when I whip out my robot, even in the poorest parts of the hood.  I love the fact that you can pick up a robot at your nearest Ralphs, you can buy some onions, carrots, grits and an pre-paid Android for $50...

What do you see people using at the ghetto McDonald's of Long Beach, Lawndale, Carson and Hawthrone?  Android baby... not a single "i" device in sight!  It's what that single mom of three kids is using to txt her babysitter, it's what those high school girls are using to do their home-works with, it's what those dudes are using in the corner to call their ma-mas with, it's what that old man is using to fill out that job application on-line...  and I'm proud to say I fit right in!

It's the phone of choice of people I see at Walmart, Starbucks, K-Mart & Sears around these parts... I hold up my old-ass phone up high in any public setting as well as in any corporate board-room meeting.  Android says, I'm open, resourceful, creative, I have my own style; and most of all I know how to get the job done on Economically!

Here is Snoop teaming up with MetroPCS...http://thedroidguy.com/2011/02/snoop-dogggg-teams-up-with-metro-pcs-for-launch-of-samsung-indulge/

Wow... just like you did when you bashed Irvine... you really went off the deep end with Android vs. iPhone. I don't even know where to start with your ill-informed opinions.

1. If you recall from your economics post, iPhones are just as cheap. In fact, now you can get a 3GS for free, a 4 for $49-$99 and a 4S from $199 up. And you forget that iPhones can function without phone service just like Androids... my wife's old 3 is now my kid's iPod.

2. Data isn't cheaper on Android than it is on an iPhone. All major carriers charge the same price for data as long as it's a smartphone. What you're going to see in the "ghetto" isn't smartphones, but feature phones or dumb phones that can do texting and has limited apps/web access without the expensive data fees.

3. As for prepaid, not sure where in the US that sign came from, and that phone doesn't look like an Android phone but yes, that is one advantage, Android is available on prepaid plans and also on no-contract carriers like MetroPCS and Boost. The problem is the phones are not subsidized so they are pricey upfront... not sure where you have been seeing Android smartphones for $50 on a no-contract service.

4. How is an iPhone any more pretentious than a Android phone with a 4.5" screen? I laugh sometimes when I see a small lady bust out her huge AT&T Infuse because her hand can barely fit around it and so she has to put it on the table just to use it with both hands (howz that for anecdotal trickery?).

You need to relax RC. All this i-bashing (both iProducts and Irvine) is going to give you high blood pressure at a young age. Just embrace all technology for what it is... do you even think Android would be where it is now if not for Apple pushing this market segment open in 2007? I'm not a hardcore Apple fan (never bought an iPod) and I'm also somewhat anti-Microsoft (I do use Windows but I refuse to buy Office and use LibreOffice instead)... but I can recognize what they have done and appreciate it. That's why I rock both iOS and Android... and Windows and OSX... because you should be open to all of it... isn't that what you said?

You'd make a terrible lawyer... please don't try to represent yourself if you get into legal trouble.

MetroPCS sells tons of dumphones/feature phones... you just proved my point.

So what brand phone is that $50 Android phone prepaid or no contract?

Here's an article just on version fragmentation:

This doesn't even talk about hardware, screen sizes, memory, CPU speed etc.

Your HTC Desire is just over 1.5 years old and just got 2.3 last August, 7(?) months after Gingerbread released... the iPhone 3GS is over 2.5 years old and got iOS5 the day it came out.

I still don't have Gingerbread on my phone and it just came out in June... boo.

The reason the iPhones have updated OSes is not because Apple wants them to have the latest and greatest.  The more likely reason is because they want to re-lock all of the jailbroken iPhones.  Keep pushing updates to discourage jailbreaking.

I looked into the cost of switching to ATT for an iPhone for my wife or stick with TMo and get a new Android phone for her.  The cost was so much higher.  The cost of our current family plan with 3 lines, including one data, is cheaper than an individual line on ATT for an iPhone.

So any official word on what carrier the Galaxy Nexus will land?  It's supposed to hit Vzn on Nov 10 and possibly be available for ATT/TMo at Best Buy stores on/near same day?

Quite honestly, I don't think Apple really cares about jailbreaking anymore... it's gonna happen regardless. So instead they are putting stuff that jailbreakers want into their new OS versions (custom wallpapers etc). The bigger reason why they are pushing out updates is to keep up to or ahead of Android and everyone else. They only refresh hardware yearly so it's the OS that they update to keep it fresh.

As you said... VZW Nov 10, but like previous Nexii (other than the 1st one), I believe it may be exclusive to VZW for a short amount of time. I'm actually not that impressed by the Galaxy Nexus other than the screen resolution and that it's going to run ICS out of the box... no expandable memory is kind of killer for me. I'll wait until next summer to get my killer Android phone (and hopefully someone makes one that isn't so huge but still has a hi-rez screen).

There is certainly nothing like a controversial chart to get the flame wars going... these gadget sites sure know how to generate clicks to their site by stirring things up.

I saw that chart last night and thought oh boy, it's going to be a long night.  I also had a long response typed up all ready to go, but I remembered what my counselor said about arguing before bed-time.  So I'm so glad I tabled the post until this morning.

People all over the bloggasphere are basically respond in a few ways.  Dispute the accuracy of the chart, bash the alternative, minimize the apparent flaws, tought the advantages & positives or dismiss the argument entirely as without merrit of comparison.

I already had a long week so I'm not going to take any negative route, going to delete my bashes and negative rants...

I will probably never win any "i" user by saying what a bad decision they made and how stupid they look using their devices.  No, the iPhone/iPad are amazing devices, they are pretty, useful and get the job done.  However, let's just say the world would be a pretty boring place if all we see were iPhones & iPads.  I've said this before, the real winners are the consumers here; I can wake up every morning and look forward to new hardware and new ways technology is pushing us forward.

I love the choices, the options the many means to get the job done; I love how personal my device is; as my phone was one of the best selling phones in the world and I have yet to meet another person with it.  I love the customization, the personalization, the freedom and the different ways my robot let me express my creativity and productivity.

There are so many different ways the htc has enhanced my life and the people around me that I will continue to catalog and document the ways.  I hope this is a satisfying response IHO, if it is not; I'm sorry but I see no other way to settle this than to meet at Best Buy at the District at high noon today and have my htc have a  shoot out with your Siri on -Browsermark- to see which devices can load a web page the fastest...  oh, IHO please let's not get to that point!!!

PS... now if you just want to meet today... and geek out on the new G-Tab 8.9... I'm all there...!

The wife doesn't stream anything on her cell, doesn't really use it for music, doesn't watch movies on it... so the non-expandable memory is not a issue.  For her, I think ICS and the better screen will be benenficial.

If the monthly cost for an iPhone wasn't so high, I'd switch her to an iPhone.

I'm thinking that the cost for T-Mo voice service is the difference... as all carriers have the same charges for data plans.

Why is it more expensive for the iPhone? I didn't think carriers charged an i-premium.

Haven't you read about the issues with Browsermark? It also runs Flash, which the iPhone skips, so the results are sketchy to begin with. In addition, there have been reports of people faking their Android phones to report themselves as an iPhone browser and the scores go up... fishy indeed.

I was there 2 weeks ago when it came out... sadly... no display model (although not sure now). You need to go to the BB in The Tustin Marketplace.
