2011: Year of the iPad 2!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
What a great, wonderful, WET day for Android users with the news of the iPhone 4S done and out of the way.  This just goes to show how far Android came to bridge the tech gap that Apple has built.  There is nothing really special anymore about Apple, with Prime coming (320 DIP) out inching close to Apple's 326 DPI display; there is virtually nothing that Apple has that Android can't offer as an alternative.

No wonder Apply has been so sue happy as of late... The Jobs legacy is running out, and I doubt Cook has the ability to lead Apple leaps & bounds into the next level as Jobs did.

Take a look at these Power-houses side-by-side...

--Apple A5 chipset, dual core Cortex A9 for 7 times faster graphics. This is basically the iPad 2 chip but probably not clocked as fast.
--Longer batter life ? 8 hrs talk time on 3G, 9 hours browsing on Wi-Fi, 10 hours video, 40 hours music.
--New intelligent switching between antennas
--HSPA+ 14.4 (no 21?)
--CDMA + GSM World phone
--8mp rear-facing camera, CMOS backside illuminated sensor, 73% more photons! High end IR filter. Wide f2.

This actually looks bad-ass...!  I hear the whole privacy thing... but it won't be long, all the socially awkward boys will be talking to their virtual "girlfriends"...

Now... I'm sure the 4S will sell very well, and there will still be hard-core Apple fans, but the playing field is a bit more even and the consumers will be the ultimate winners here...

Now.. in saying this... All eyes will be on Nexus Prime due for an announcement next week...

and I have to say, the pressure is on!  And the peeps at Samsung sure have a lot of tweaking to do, if the Fandroids have anything to say about the thick bottom "bezel" everyone is complaining about

prime_gsmarena_001.jpg

so... I my opinion, I don't expect Prime to more than (hardware wise) anything we've seen already in the Galaxy SII, just like how the Nexus S pretty much copied the Galaxy S.  But again the big thing here like iOS5 will be ICS...!  So we shall see...

new Prime "curved" video...

I'm excited about the Nexus Prime... but more to see what Ice Cream Sandwich is going to look like since I'll be able to put that on my tablet.

I'm not sure they should keep it a VZW exclusive... but we'll see if it comes out on other carriers like previous Nexus phones. Not really digging that curved screen but I guess we have to see how it works first.

I guess I should have known the new iPhone would be just a bump from the 4, they did that with the 3G to the 3GS and it makes sense from a manufacturing standpoint to wait at least two years for a cycle (and also for all those iPhone 4 accessory makers). It's just that the change from the iPad to the iPad 2 made us think that they may also redesign the iPhone 4 in the next cycle.

Wall Street doesn't like it though... AAPL took a beating yesterday.

very sad day...

If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?

Wow... I expected him to be around for a while after he stepped down but I guess it really was getting close.

Despite what the Apple detractors say... what he did with that company truly was "magical".

I'm not a social network guy... I never joined Facebook or Twitter but I did caved-in to Google+ when I got an invitation from the Android community.  And yes.. TI is the only place RC posts (regularly).  I found out of Jobs death at 4:40pm yesterday, and by all accounts, that is about 10 minutes after he passed... that is damn freaken FAST!!!

This is my first real-time experience with breaking news on the social network, and this is a damn powerful tool...!  I've been stuck on the blogasphere all night and this morning...  there has been some great articles... Namely this one from

Wirecutter
Steve Jobs Was Always Kind To Me (Or, Regrets of An Asshole)http://thewirecutter.com/2011/10/steve-jobs-was-always-kind-to-me-or-regrets-of-an-asshole/

Brian Lam recounts his professional relationship with Jobs, and the drama that unfolded when the iPhone 4 was lost and how it was recovered... it reads like any noir crime novel... especially if you imagine the back drop of Frisco with all the rolling fog...

Sometime around 8-9 last night... the banter returned to Android as usual... the speed at which we gather and process information is fast as ever... unfortunately we are also forced to grieve at a faster pace and I just don't think it works that way...

Like it or not, social media is here to stay, we can ignore it, use it or try to balance it in our lives...

I resist the call of social media... if my friends want to catch up with me... they can email, call or visit me.

Plus... I find a lot of these Facebook pages more like "Oooh... look what I did" which is a bit high schoolish to me.

And I realize the irony in that statement... but at least I keep my shenanigans in focused forums of my interest (I always wonder if anyone in one forum will make the connection to my persona in another).

Reading the history of Steve Jobs is amazing... went from an adopted baby, to a college dropout, to rich at 25 and didn't stop even after getting booted out of Apple. Instead he became even more successful with NeXT and Pixar and then found his way back to Apple made it pivotal in several consumer categories. I didn't realize he was only 56 (his recent health issues made him look much older) so there was much more he could have done. That Stanford speech is really good as he details crucial points in his life that led him to his success.

After getting into some of the specifics of his involvement with Apple's products, I do wonder how they will do without his drive, vision and... stubbornness.

Makes me wonder if there is opportunity to start something in today's fast moving and fickle society. Facebook killing MySpace makes you think so... but even now is a different time than then. Maybe I'll start Banana Corporation and make ihoPhones.

When you think about it, without Steve Jobs, we wouldn't have the computers we have today (since Windows just copied Mac, without Mac, no Windows  :) ), we wouldn't have our iPods, iPhones, iPads, and no Pixar movies.  The way we connect with each other all over the globe has completely changed.  The world is truly a far better place because of the visionary Steve Jobs was. He will be forever remembered and missed.

EDIT: And one more thing (pun intended) - Like IHO said, the history of Steve Jobs is truly an amazing one.  Going from having nothing to being one of the world's richest people.  No government handouts (or handouts at all, for that matter).  Steve Jobs worked hard ON HIS OWN and achieved the American Dream.  He is a true self-made American success story.

I am running soooo behind this morning... There are so much Android news today that my head is spinning...  I hate speculating and wanted to wait till next week to post more ICS & Nexus Prime stuff when we get official confirmation but here is the news out of Engadget and Phandroid... and besides CTIA is going to be delayed...

here are are few screen shots & video we have this morning...

now... that is out of the way...

on to my original planned post that I started last night...

I've changed about five lock screens since my last post about Android security.  Lock screens on Android are FUN to play with in and of itself.

I wanted to pay a tribute to Steve Jobs this weekend so I've found this on Magic Lock Screen.

Apple users can eat my robot this weekend cause I bet in iOS5 wont have this lockscreen. It can only be found in the Android market. I'm going to show this screen to as many iPhone users as possible this weekend.

Besides the SJ lockscreen, there is a nice Sense 3 lockscreen. Some are free Some are only $.99.

CM7 also has some great lockscreens, I was using the rotary screen with the option of a third button to unlock ANY app or shortcut you program. I set it to open the camera.

I was also playing around with CM7 guesture lockscreens...

Seeing the same iPhone lockscreen is like seeing a person wearing the same outfit for the past 6 years; or someone having to eat the same dish over and over.

I love changing the lockscreen to fit my mood, taste and current trends. We can hope to see the SJ locksscreen on the iPhone but for now it seems that Android fans are the only ones who know how to pay tribute in style.

Samsung, the biggest rival to Apple in the smartphone business and which is involved in a number of bitter courtroom battles with the US company, has abruptly postponed its scheduled launch of a new top-end phone next Tuesday.

The apparent motive was not to be seen to intrude on the reactions around the death of Apple's co-founder and former chief executive Steve Jobs, whose death was announced late on Wednesday at his California home.

This probably much seals my decision to get the Galaxy S2...I cannot wait for the Nexus Prime any longer especially since there is a rumor that it will be for Verizon only for a while.

In talking to iPhone users in detail these past couple of weeks... here is a summary of some "generalities" I have discovered:

iphone-for-dummies.jpg

iPhone Users...

-- Automatically assumes everyone else owns iPhones, even though clearly, my phone says HTC!

-- Have no idea (I mean, can't really name or identify); a non-iPhone, smartphone.

-- Generally have no idea what those system icons on the phone mean - "No it doesn't appear that you have any Data Signal here"

-- Do not have the slightest clue of how Cell phone technology works - "No you don't pull Data (from the internet) from the Satellite, you mean GPS?"

-- Are always playing mindless games EVERYWHERE! I mean everywhere during our conversation, surmons, phone calls, driving, watching TV, walking around & trying to study.

-- Have never really seen an Android device in detail and didn't know of our capabilities.

-- Usually are pleased and impressed with my Android introduction/demo & interested in switching to Android for their next phone, especially when they hear how much I pay monthly for my plan & how I get free music & movies!

In other Android news on this Monday & over the weekend...

Been really digging the new HTC Sensation XL...

The GSM Version of the Nexus Prime passes the FCC... so to confuse you guys even more, the Prime should be coming to another carrier than Verizon...

I hope that is the case.

I am almost positive that I am getting the S2...the funny thing is that the reason is because the Nexus Prime will have a screen that is too "big" ...I saw a demo model of the S2 this week and it was already pretty big at 4.3 inch...I cannot imagine what a 4.65 inch screen would look like.

Sprint's S2 is bigger than the other US S2s at 4.5"... it's thin but the form factor is still pretty large.

@RC: You almost sound like an Android Supremist. :D

Ok... ok... so when there is really no Android news... today... I naturally gravitate to bashing Apple... (really sorry...)  some real funny stuff coming up on the net...

This is about the only serious video... I have today... now a word of caution... I don't take benchmarks very seriously, but the 4S is seen clocked at 89,657!  The Android community is laughing their heads off this morning... most rooted Android users test over 100,000...  here I am running a single core 1ghz, and I even get 70,946...

here are some other numbers...http://www.androidcentral.com/droid-bionic-browser-benchmarked-numbers-look-impressive
