I came across 2 articles, one from Redfin about where everyone is moving from/to and the average salary of what a person needs to make to live in a state.

The Redfin one is interesting:

Top destination is Las Vegas, followed by... Sacramento!

Who says people are leaving Cali? Although, Dallas does seem to be the destination from Cali.

And New Yorkers are all moving to Florida.

As for most expensive states to live:

  1. Hawaii: $112,411
  2. Massachusetts: $87,909
  3. California: $80,013
  4. New York: $73,226
  5. Alaska: $71,570
Weren't we talking about moving to Hawaii in other threads?

And who would live in Alaska?

Population Shift out of the Blue states to Red States.

California > Texas
New York > Florida
Illinois > Georgia

Texas's population will eventually outgrow California as the most populous state. Florida's population is already greater than New York. Georgia will eventually surpass Ohio, Illinois, and Pennsylvania's population as the 5th most poplous state. It will take time though.

The only state I would move to is New Hampshire, where we lived for 4 years when I worked in the Boston area. Ocean is close, lots of ski hills close by (45 mins from my house), cheap high quality seafood and no state income tax or sales taxes. Bedford NH in particular.

Do you have any demographic data to go with the numbers, like race, age, income level?

I will do some research on the demographic data for you. As of now, I have data on which out-of-state students are the top feeder states to Georgia Institute of Techology, Georgia's flagship University. After Georgia (In-State), California students are the largest incoming students. This seems to make sense as Georgia Tech is now the third most difficult Public University to get into after UCLA and UC Berkeley.

Most of these California students will graduate from Tech and mostly likely settle down in Georgia. Among international students, the top 3 international students demographics are from China, India, and South Korea. After meeting several international students from these three countries, majority of them don't go back to their mother country after they graduate from Tech but settle down in Georgia. This is one of the reasons why the Chinese, Indian, and Korean population is exploding in Georgia.

The median income in Johns Creek, GA is $153,882 in 2022 and the median income in Irvine is $122,948. Many of the residents in North Atlanta are small businesses owners like myself. The median home price in Johns Creek is $698,000 while the median home price in Irvine is $1,543,820. This seems right as the new homes I saw at Orchard Hills were about 3 times more than new homes in Johns Creek with similiar square foot and specs. In terms of your comment on Atlanta weather, I really think taste for weather is subjective to each individual. After living in Johns Creek for 15 years now, I like the weather here better than Irvine. I get to see all four seasons and trees, nature is more greener here, than Irvine. In my last visit, the weather was bit too dry and brown for my taste especially near the Portola Parkway Area. Below you can see what the beautiful nature scenary looks like just an hour drive north of Johns Creek.

Georgia is more affordable but the weather sucks and job market pays half what Silicon Valley pays with 1% of the jobs. Lots of G Tech alumni in San Jose/Silicon Valley.

The weather has been pretty nice in Feb in Johns Creek in the low 70s. Temperatures average 90 degree to Mean max of 95 degrees in July. July and August are the hottest seasons in Atlanta. I actually like the Fall, Winter, and Springs season here. My least favorite is the summer weather.
The photos I posted above are from the North Georgia Mountains. It is actually cooler up there in the summer months.

yup, I've had multiple jobs where my team was up in Santa Clara/Sunnyvale, and I've been able to quietly work from remote offices down here, since it's such a quick flight when necessary.

Dude - GA gets freezing rain, humidity and bugs. You can rationalize it all you want but quality of life is vastly inferior to coastal CA, especially South OC or North SD County, and as ThirtySomething said it’s a 1 hr flight or 7 hr drive to sick paying jobs in SV.

For the sake of comparion, Lets focus on Johns Creek and Irvine. After living in Johns Creek for almost 15 years, I would argue the life style in Johns Creek is much better than that of Irvine. I am ready to debate this one with you if you are.

Why do you think the Irvine prices are higher? Maybe because...more people want to live there?

Why dont we ask those people who live in $4M dollar homes in a cookie cutter OH subdivision paying $1000/monthy HOA dues. How is your quality of life in Irvine? How is your overall happiness of your Family and Marriage life? What is your target age to fully retire?

If people are paying $4m to live in OH... I'm pretty sure their finances are pretty good.

As for quality of life... c'mon.... it's Irvine.

You have a better chance winning this thread at TalkJohnsCreek and maybe would still lose. :)
