I like the Bay but it's more expensive than Irvine.
I’m so over it - I relish coming home to beautiful LN every weekend. Even the 4 hour drive to Tahoe isn’t always that due to traffic - sometimes it’s longer than the drive to Mammoth from OC. The only attraction up here is money, like working in NY. People up here sort of look down on OC.
 
It’s on my dime as the founder wants the role based in the Bay. I was recruited for 7 roles over the past 3 months since we made the move back to OC and every one of them wanted the role based in the Bay. The reality for me is this is where I’ve built my network over 2 decades in semiconductor and software sales. And it’s binary in that these jobs largely don’t exist in OC because there aren’t other big technology companies to sell to in OC or LA. There are a few but it’s a small pond and I didn’t get recruited for any of them. At my level you don’t go after a job proactively unless your old boss who loved you is the HM - it comes to you.
I will probably end up doing the same for my next job. Current gig the whole team is in Sunnyvale and Seattle, i'm the only one in Irvine. previous jobs at different companies I had the same thing going.

If I am promoted one level though, it's actually still worth it if I have to pay for my own hotel and flight each week!

Do you just rent a room or an apartment, or do you have to book a (possibly different) hotel each week?

  • Previously, Amazon required employees to be in the office at least three days a week.
  • Amazon is also flattening its corporate structure by having fewer managers in each organization.
Amazon has always been a meat grinder for the majority of employees. But the standout ones have always been (and will continue to) get exceptions.

Meta said the same thing last year but then they walked it back for anyone who was special/extra good.

Exactly. James Hamilton lives on a yacht, traveling around the world and don't need to be in office 5 days a week.
Who is James Hamilton? the architect behind Amazon's AWS which is Amazon's most profitable and highest growth division.

I’m 3 weeks in and have been using Google’s booking engine to find hotel deals. I might go for an AirBnB next week, and will investigate furnished serviced apts. I’ll update the thread as I learn more about my options. Ive found the nicest 24 Hour fitness is the one on Saratoga Sunnyvale Rd so I try to stay as close as possible between there and Santana Row.

Amazon cloud boss says employees unhappy with 5-day office mandate can leave


· Amazon’s cloud boss Matt Garman told employees in an all-hands meeting that if they don’t agree with its new five-day in-office mandate, they could leave for another company.

· The company announced the new policy last month. Employees have until Jan. 2 to adhere to the new policy.

· Roughly 37,000 employees have joined an internal Slack channel created last year to advocate for remote work and share grievances about the return-to-work mandate, according to a person familiar.
 
That's what I mean. It cost money for Amazon to layoff, so by imposing this policy, a % will quit, thus helping them cut costs without increasing UI expenses.

Elon did this when he bought XTwitter.

I’m a believer in remote work but way too many people have taken advantage of this and don’t pull their weight. And large companies in California these days are too woke to actually fire people so they have to do this dance…
Strong performers at these companies are still able to be 100% remote - it’s a privilege, not a fundamental right.
 
Well... that's what Amazon is doing... require 5 days in office like Musk did when he took over (although he also let tons of people go, but that UI cost was probably a lot less than their salaries).

Unsure there is a reasonable salary range that could get me back in office... but I'll take offers. :)
 
Uh, amazon fires people all the time, and Google does a little less but has an 'up or out' criteria. It sounds like you have no idea wtf you are talking about.
Amazon is more like you describe but still has people they need to get rid of.. thus the forced return to work. Google is woke as fuck and full of dead weight. And then think about all the large non tech companies, even worse. Your head is in the sand if you can’t acknowledge that.

Yes anytime people who don't know what they're talking about ramble on without first handle knowledge it touches a nerve.

Profit per employee is some of the *highest* at these 'bloated FAANGs' you're talking about. Not nimble unicorns that just went IPO or "cuthroat" banks.

I've worked at various big tech companies as well as FAANG, it's nothing like you say. For the most part people have to bust their ass or they will get PIPed. It's not as bad as finance, and I'm sure there are teams here and there people can coast at, but by and large it's not a chill place. The vast majority of my FAANG teammates are putting in 45+ hour weeks.


Here's another way to look at it. Snowflake and Databricks for example, are well known unicorns that have billions in revenue and employ thousands of engineers. Each of their respective product's main competitors is a corresponding offering from AWS (Amazon) and GCP (Google), both of which are a *tiny fraction* of the overall portfolio of offerings from those Cloud Providers. I think most people have no idea how many engineers it actually takes to support a billion dollar+ revenue project that is deployed at a planet scale.
 
The FAANGS (and others) overhired since 2020. That is bloat. They all are trying to get lean recently. They can't do what Elon did at Twitter so they use other methods like reducing benefits.

Tell me the per profit per employee of Twitter/X and then tell me the per profit of Alphabet and Amazon.

Elon clearly screwed up by firing too many people. You realize they're desperately trying to hire now right? You can go to the jobs page to see. Many of those roles posted are not just for a single open position.
