It's pretty good- a much better balanced Bordeaux style wine than typical California Cabs or Merlots. I think it is more like $13.99 at Costco, but I'm not sure. I know I have purchased it at the Costco Tustin El Camino location.



It needs some time or decanting to open up a bit.

Went to BevMo for the 5 cent sale this weekend. I bought a lot of Chardonnays with a regular price of $11-$16. So far the Round Hill Chardonnay is the winner. Not sure what the price is but it's somewhere in that range and you can't beat it for 5 cents for the second bottle. Even at the regular price it's very good. I'll update as we try more of those we bought.

Wal-Mart announced that, sometime in 2009, it will begin offering customers a new discount item ... Wal-Mart's own brand of wine.



The world's largest retail chain is rumored to be teaming up with Ernest & Julio Gallo Winery of California to produce the spirits at an affordable price -- in the $2 to $5 range.



Wine connoisseurs may not be inclined to put a bottle of the Wal-Mart brand into their shopping carts, but "There is a market for inexpensive wine." said Kathy Micken, professor of marketing at University of Arkansas, Bentonville. "However, branding will be very important."



Customer surveys were conducted to determine the most attractive name for the Wal-Mart wine brand.



The top surveyed names in order of popularity were:



- Chateau Traileur Parc

- White Trashfindel

- Big Red Gulp

- World Championship Riesling

- NASCARbernet

- Chef Boyardeaux

- Peanut Noir

- I Can't Believe it's not Vinegar

- Grape Expectations

- Nasti Spumante



The beauty of Wal-Mart wine is that it can be served with either white meat (Possum) or red meat (Squirrel).

Service, pricing, snotty attitude, poor service. I hear that my issue is related to only half the staff and I was just unlucky, but frankly I'd rather go to BevMo - the WalMart of liquer stores.

They have a store in Fullerton, I've never been there, but the one in Toluca Lake is an absolute gem of the Valley.



Fresh and Easy has a master sommilier on staff. His selections tend to be dry and little fruit, and a clean finish - which is good for me. I'm a big fan.
 
TJ's has a pretty good selection. If you're into reds, I recommend the Rodney Strong Pinot, Sebastiani Merlot, and BR Cohn Cab. These 3 are usually regulars for my daily drinkers. The Chateau Ste. Michelle Cab has been good in the past, but for some reason I'm not digging this years vintage.

You should go to WINEX with me some time. I'm shocked they were snooty. Last time I went there, I told the owner about how I am a second gen customer who remembers when they were located across the street, and I remember my dad taking me there as a kid and promising me a toy afterward if I behaved. The owner had a good laugh.



Vendome in Fullerton is great and not so great. Temperature control is not a priority, so while you may find a Lamborn zin there, it may not be the same from a temp controlled shop. You definitely can find some of the harder to find wines there.



And... you can find <a href="http://yp.ocregister.com/Wayne--27s+Villa+Park+Liquor.9.1698853p.home.html">Opus One at Wayne's Liquor in VP.</a> His price is usually fair, and the temp control is so so. You can also find some other high-end hard to find wines there, and really... the prices are pretty fair.

I bought the 2005 Santa Martina Toscana (super Tuscan) at Hi-Time for (I think) $8.99. We had it last night, and after it had time to open up a bit it was surprisingly good for the price.
 
I have found that this wine is very, very good. I don't usually enjoy wine but this is fruity and absolutely delicious:
