Where do you get your furniture?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

Maybe you can take the "left by the dumpster" idea to the next level. Haven't tried this, but here's an idea:

1. Join a social organization (ex. church) in an older and wealthy part of town (ex. Turtle Rock or other) where they're a lot of baby boomers about to downsize.

2. Be nice, get to know people awhile.

3. Let it be known that you're a young couple looking to furnish your apartment, if anyone moving has some furniture or houshold goods they'd like to give away, let you know and you'll come pick it up.

That might be nice for the people downsizing (ex. see some of their posessions they have fond memories of go to someone nice that they know, rather than some slick fast talking liquidation guy who rips them off on the price anyhow, plus it's less hassle and they don't have to lift it) and a cheap way to furnish your apartment.

Alternatively, you could call up people who often get stuck with furniture and stuff from the ill prepared (ex. U-store it places, moving companies) and let them know if they have any leftover stuff, please give you a call.

The Bombay Company is going out of business and all of their stores are liquidating over the coming weeks. It's worth doing a little legwork to see what bargains can be found.

For less effort for free furniture, just use craigslist.org and go the the FREE section. Check often and you'll get lucky with some good stuff. Most of the time it's people moving and can't move the furniture and it's too late to sell, so they give it away.

I check all the time... people give away TV's, Washer/Dryers, Fridges, Sofas, etc. Most time, they will have something wrong with them, and every now and then, there's listings for that have nothing wrong at all.

yup. I put up a listing for a free mattress and boxspring (a good one, barely used...going from a 2 bd to a 1 bd, didn't need it).

Within 2 minutes I had 3 people email me to snag it ! TWO minutes !

I do not want to start a new furniture thread but I would like to see if people have some new ideas.

So far we've been to a few stores and have not seen anything we really like. We did like some of the options on the sofas at some place in the Tustin Market Place.

Did you check out the Home Consignment Center? There is one in Foothill Ranch too. Seriously, there is some good stuff there, and prices, already highly discounted, are negotiable.

My place has mostly Thomasville and a dining set from Ethan Allen.

For everything else I go with Macy?s Home at South Coast.

From Waterford to Vera Wang, hands down they have the best selection.

ISM, I just found this thread and saw your comment about the home consignment store, so when my GF gets home in a few minutes we are going to go check out the consignment store :)

I remember going to Macy's Home and seeing some very nice furniture.

We are looking for nice darker woods that are on the inexpensive side. We just need something to hold us together for 7 to 10 years.

I collect lots of old arts and crafts Mission Style Furnature. Alot of the stuff is from the Stickley Co., not exactly common, but I intend to keep it for a while.

We were looking for a large dinning room table early last year. We spent one morning going from furniture store to furniture store in the Tustin Market Place. In the almost-last store that we visited we found exactly what we were looking for at an incredible price. At Thomasville the same size was nearly $10k for the table and 8 chairs. At Finders Keepers, we got a huge table and 8 chairs for under $2k. I was also totally happy with some of their unique accessories. We were not in the market for any other furniture, so I'm not sure I could help anyone else out as far as opinions on other pieces. I looked it up for you guys and I notice that just in May 2008 the place is EXPANDING. http://www.irvinecompany.com/aboutus/News.asp?type=news&archive;=&release=1234&category=22&cid=3

Either he's crazy or he knows what he is doing. The owner is a very nice and extremely interesting guy. Apparently he had a stroke at a fairly early age and during his recovery he kind of reevaluated his circumstances and now has a VERY upbeat and friendly approach to customers and his workers alike. One of his arms/hand is extremely affected, but he conducts business well. He has evidence around his workspace of several charities he regularly donates effort/money to. His own family has been in the furniture and interior design business literally all his life. His mother was a interior designer who was in strong demand and he picked up a lot of his strategies and buying habits from her.

I recommend the place for a visit. At the time we went, he was having a "no sales tax" event and it was sweet to avoid paying the tax on our stuff.

Where can I get the furniture and decor found in above property? I like that simple pine wood colored bed. For the living room, is that textured paint or wall paper?

We just picked up some beautiful Broyhill stuff at 70% off from Big Lots. Broyhill is gone now but they have been getting in some nice designer stuff, you just have to check back periodically.

The home consignment center on Jamboree has really great stuff! Also I find some good stuff on Craigslist, I just search "z gallerie" or "Pottery barn" and have gotten some nice pieces.
