WARNING: PS: Coyote Attack - 3 year old little girl

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I don't know what's morally & legally correct but I read this yesterday from the portola springs portal and it makes me sad and angry. Shoot them all!

"I am writing this letter to you to ask for your assistance. As you already know, my son was attacked by a coyote on Sunday morning (7/5/15 at 9:30am) in our garage. It happened within 5 minutes after I had the garage door open and I was only a few feet away from my child. In an instant, the coyote bit him and punctured his face, neck, head and back of his leg. Fortunately, it didn?t inflict any fatal injuries and his life was spared. However, now it knows the taste of human and vulnerability and helplessness of a human child.
These coyotes are getting aggressive and no longer afraid of people. They are encroaching into our own homes and attacking our children. This is third attack on a child in Portola Springs and they are attacking small children under the age of three. Next time, the injuries may be fatal and the result may be unthinkable."

I think it was last week, someone mentioned that coyotes were spotted in Woodbury.  Wondering how far do they go inland.

It sucks what happened to that kid. I'm still against killing them. Even if something like this happened to my daughter.  This isn't just our world as much as we like to think it is.

They should send that letter to the OC register with a picture of the injuries.  It should at least get into the local news.

What if it was fatal?

Sadly that is what it would take before any serious goverment action is taken.

still would not change my mind. we share the land with the animals, i knew there coyotes in columbus square and still bought a house here, there a lot of them because they live on the empty land on the base. So i always have an eye out for them when i walk my dogs or daughter.

On this I will respectfully disagree...we share the world with cockroaches and Rats too but they just don't seem to be as cute pests so we have no hesitation on eliminating them for public safety. IMHO

well we all draw the line somewhere and im not sure that is an apples to apples comparison. coyotes wont invade your home and potentially cause diseases. yes, i know this happened in a garage but seems like a low probability event.

3 attacks in PS recently doesn't seem that low of a probability to me.
also, some residents around here seem to think this may be the same rogue coyote.  if that's the case, then I'm all for killing it.

Four incidents involving children in one month is ridiculous!

Kids >>> coyotes

Time to send out the hunters and trappers. Local residents also need to take precautions as outlined in the article.

In RSM / Trabuco / Coto, we've had Coyotes hopping over the fences, snatching cats and dogs. Average fence out here is about 5-6ft high, not the short HOA fences you see in some back yards. It's likely to get worse until we get more rain.

that's F scary..

Will only get much worse as the GP is built out. Bosque, Upper Bee Canyon, golf course, green belt right next to the new high school, wildlife corridors designed for predators - coyotes, bobcats, lions, skunks, coons, 'possums, reptiles, and their prey, to circulate from the mountains to the sea. All among the dense packed Irvine $1M homes. Won't be safe outside at night. But you all knew that, right?  :-[  :-[

Beep beep! We need his help!  ;D

I have to agree with Qwerty. We are invading into the space of wildlife and then we are shocked when they "God Forbid" attack a human as they are fighting to survive because we have eliminated their food sources. And we are "shocked" that they then have to adapt to the change in environment and make our cats and dogs (and possibly young children) their food source. Humans are so ignorant in thinking we own this planet so as we destroy its Ecosystems that it should not affect us. Or we can continue to destroy more of the natural Ecosystems in place and not expect that to come around and impact human lives in some way.

Sure go out and kill the coyotes - that will not eliminate the problem. We need to learn to Co-exist with wildlife and the Ecosystems that surround us. Yes protect yourself, defend yourself if about to be attacked, be vigilant with young children and small pets especially from dawn to dusk from May through summer months when coyote activity is at it's highest peak.

To think we can deal with this problem by going out on a killing spree on wildlife is just simply barbaric and ignorant.

Very well said.

This is coming from someone who just bought a house in Orchard Hills. TIC just tore up large grassy areas and Avocado groves so you can live in your McMansion. The local wildlife in your area would have preferred if you didn't buy your home.

Also there is no "possibly young children" as a food source--they ALREADY attacked children four times in the last month.

I don't advocate random mass killing of wildlife.  The goal would be targeted culling of the local coyote population where there have been documented cases of aggressive incidents or injuries involving people.

I agree people have a responsibility to learn about dangers in their environment and to take prudent measures to reduce those risks.

At the same time, ruling out select trapping/hunting of coyote is irresponsible. Would you rather wait until a child is killed, then take action?

What does me buying a house in orchard hills have anything to do with it? Yes I am aware that in order to build the community they had to destroy and disrupt existing Ecosystems but I accept that fact and prefer to adapt to the changes and consequences that come along with that. I do my part to minimize my carbon footprint on this planet and take responsibility for that. Some on this thread have mentioned mass killings of coyotes which I don't agree with. I know there have been child attacks and people have lost pets to coyotes (I lost my own cat to a coyote) but it's funny that poeple are so "shocked" by this. It is a natural consequence of these environmental disruptions, that is my only point.
