Top 10 Bands and/or Album

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Back in the dark ages of Tower Records, they called these "Desert Isalnd Discs". The ten records you wanted to be stranded on an island with. Since my snarky "Balls of Fury" comments didn't go over so well (sorry Eva) in no order:

10. Peter Gabirel - So

9. Beatles - The White Album (twenty years ago I hated it. You too can change your mind)

8. Miles Davis - Sketches in Spain

7. Guns n Roses - Use Your Illusion Vol. II

6. Bob Marley - Legend

5. The Cure - Three Imaginary Boys (OG UK Import Version)

4. Fleetwood Mac - Rumors (which, interestingly, I don't own)

3. The Police - Syncronicity

2. NWA - Straight Outta Compton

1. Steve Miller Band - Greatest Hits 74-78

Close runner ups (no room in the inn, kids)

11. B-52's - Mesopotamia/Party Album

12. Metallica - .....and Justice for All

13. Peter Frampton - Frampton Comes Alive

14. Prince - Purple Rain

I would be remiss if I didn't add some of my fave classical pieces:

Antonio Vivaldi - The Four Seasons

Claude Debussy - Claire de Lune

Carl Orff - Carmina Burana

Maurice Ravel - Bolero

J.S. Bach - Air on a G String

Ludwig van Beethoven - Moonlight Sonata

George Frideric Handel - The Messiah

Johann Pachelbel - Canon in D Major

Igor Stravinsky - The Firebird

Pyotr Tchaikovsky - The Nutcracker

Mozart - The Magic Flute

Since I joined the IHB forums, I wondered why is missing a music topic if each blog entry gets inspiration from a song? I think IR can very well cover music as well as real estate.

"Led Zeppeling IV" - Led Zeppelin

"A night at the opera" - Queen

"Back in black" - AC/DC

"Pyromania" - Def Leppard (Photograph!)

"Joshua Tree" - U2

"Ten" - Pearl Jam

"Nirvana" - Nirvana

"A rush of blood to the head" - Coldplay

"Live" - Live

Simple Minds, The Cure, Radiohead, Muse, The Killers, etc.

One hit wonders of the 80's, 90's, etc.

But the question is, what are you hearing *now*? which album/song will you *buy*?

anything that has caught your attention lately?

In my case, (warning lots of energy)

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvL91J9h4sU">"Wicked Game" - Giant Drag</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PinbakYCbhc">Gossip</a>

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJDONaWp-Ps">"9th Symphony, 2nd Movement" - Beethoven</a>

Some favorite songs:

<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vfLvZCdT9g">ROBYN!!</a> I can't remember the name of the CD though but I've had it playing in the Car for around a month..It's pretty awesome imho.

I'm still trying to come up with a top ten list...

[quote author="SoCal78" date=1226298521]How could we possibly forget Tom Petty? ... and I'll toss in John Mellancamp too.</blockquote>

Tom Petty is cool, but I wouldn't put one of his albums as one of the top ten of all time.

Have you seen either Tom Petty or John Mellencamp in concert?

I have not had the pleasure of seeing either of them in concert. You??

I've seen both. And both were memorable for different reasons.

The last time I saw Tom Petty was back in October 2000. I was lucky enough to see him that time at The Joint inside the Hard Rock in Las Vegas. (The tickets for shows at The Joint are a bit pricey, but well worth the money. I'm not sure of the capacity, but it's somewhere around 600 people. I've seen Tom Petty, Guns N Roses, and The Rolling Stones there) Seeing someone like Tom Petty in a venue that small is a wonderfully different experience.

When I saw John Mellencamp, he was still using the name "John Cougar". The date was 10/31/1982, and he was opening for The Who in Tempe, Az. (They called the concert Wholowween) John Cougar was wearing orange and black crepe paper and dancing on one of the speakers during "Valley of the Thundering Hearts" Someone in the audience threw a bottle that pegged John in the head and knocked him off the speaker. They stopped the concert for a while, but he ended up coming back. When he came back, he was wearing a hard hat (like those used at construction sites) and sang "It hurts so good".

What about Stadium Arcadium - Red Hot Chili Peppers? And both Sgt. Pepper and Revolver.... and American Idiot - Green Day? Oh, and Graceland - Paul Simon. Those are all great.

Newer? White Stripes, Killers, Jet, Kaiser Chiefs.

It's hard to pick a DiD from the Beatles. Frankly, the records I picked aren't my favorites, there are the ones I want to take with me.

I think Paul Simon "Graceland" is my least favorite record of all time, followed closely by Tom Petty's "Let Me Up, I've Had Enough".

Like no_vas, I have hundreds of CDs (although not as many as him), so it is hard to pick just a few. Here is my first try at it. I couldn't stop at 10 though. Some of these are more current favs over all-time favs.

Shirley Horn - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Heres-Life-Shirley-Horn/dp/B0000046KM/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226360190&sr=1-1">Here's to Life</a> - one of the best vocal jazz albums ever. I could listen to this every day and not get tired of it. The title track alone makes it worth listening to.

Lyle Lovett - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Road-Ensenada-Lyle-Lovett/dp/B000002OZO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358477&sr=1-3">The Road to Ensenada</a> - has all the elements of good Lyle Lovett: humor, sadness, and hope. The tribute to Walter Hyatt is a warm touch.

Uncle Walt's Band - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Girl-Sunny-Shore-Uncle-Walts/dp/B000006JDA/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358207&sr=8-1">The Girl on the Sunny Shore</a> - Speaking of Walter Hyatt, this band's music is so clean. Inspired me to start learning to play guitar at age 35.

Chris Isaak - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Baja-Sessions-Chris-Isaak/dp/B000002N9X/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358458&sr=1-4">Baja Sessions</a> - music that sounds effortless.

Otis Redding - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Otis-Redding-Story/dp/B000008JV0/ref=sr_1_26?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358425&sr=1-26">The Otis Redding Story</a> - did more before he died at age 26 than most of us could hope to do. My king of soul. Aretha got her "Respect" from Otis. The Blues Brothers got their theme song ("Can't Turn You Loose") and half their band from Otis. The Black Crowes became "Hard to Handle" due to Otis.

Sam Cooke - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Man-His-Music-Sam-Cooke/dp/B000002WB4/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358303&sr=1-5">The Man and His Music</a> - anyone who could influence Otis Redding so much is worth a listen. Smooth soul. Obama could use his "A Change Is Gonna Come" as his theme song.

Lovin' Spoonful - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Anthology-Lovin-Spoonful/dp/B0000032RY/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358252&sr=1-4">Anthology</a> - fun folk.

John Hiatt - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Bring-Family-John-Hiatt/dp/B000002GHH/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359508&sr=8-1">Bring the Family</a> - where did Bonnie Raitt get that song? -- from John Hiatt.

Greg Brown - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Poet-Game-Greg-Brown/dp/B000001BAA/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359392&sr=1-1">The Poet Game</a> - the title track is perhaps my favorite song of all time.

Bruce Springsteen - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Tunnel-Love-Bruce-Springsteen/dp/B0000026E5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359691&sr=1-1">Tunnel of Love</a> - a wonderful reflection on love.

Josh Rouse - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Country-Mouse-City-House-Rouse/dp/B000ROAL3U/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226358911&sr=1-2">Country House City Mouse</a> - fun music.

Billy Bragg & Wilco - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Mermaid-Avenue-Billy-Bragg-Wilco/dp/B000007NC0/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359097&sr=1-1">Mermaid Avenue</a> - modern music for the timelessness of Woody Guthrie lyrics. "Another Man's Done Gone" makes me contemplate my mortality.

Duffy - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Rockferry-Duffy/dp/B0014I4KIK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359136&sr=1-1">Rockferry</a> -- a current fav, another modern throwback soul singer from the UK.

She & Him - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/One-She-Him/dp/B0012IWHQO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359367&sr=1-1">Volume One</a> - fun fun fun from Zooey Deschanel (the girl from <em>Elf</em> who can really sing) and M. Ward.

Feist - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Let-Die-Feist/dp/B0008KLVW8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226359337&sr=1-2">Let It Die</a> - love Mushaboom.

Flight of the Conchords - <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Flight-Conchords/dp/B0014DBZXS/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1226375218&sr=8-2">Flight of the Conchords</a> - The #2 parody music duo in New Zealand -- need I say more?

How about some Motown favorites like Al Green, Marvin Gaye, Smokey Robinson. No list is complete without the Godfather of Soul... the late, great James Brown.

I have to agree with Gotti on the Cult - Electric. I can listen to that album forever.

Other top favs:

The Band

Chamberlain (old indie band)

Elvis Costello

Counting Crows (Recovering the satellites/this desert life)

Pearl Jam (Pearl Jam/Binural)

Tom Petty

The Police

Sunny Day Real Estate (Pink Album)

The Who

Counting Crows are great. I also really like their old album "August and Everything After".

I saw them in concert at Glen Avon about 13 years (?!) ago. (I had never seen so much weed in my life.)
