I noticed that the hours of coverage is like half a day at best. My friends in other cities get full day. Do you know if this will change? I'm hearing the extended care offer by schools are over $1000, so it's a decent chunk when you think you're having a public education.

Nah doubt it will change. Extended care is still cheaper than full day of care at a Montessori or whatever. But you’ll get better care at a Montessori.

That seems like a great deal! I assume wait-lists are long?

Depends. In Los Angeles the number of school age children has declined by 15% since 2015-2016 school year. Some places act like they have long wait list, but after your visit they'd call to ask if you're still interested.

For cities with desirable public schools, many are now open to broader inter-district transfers due to aging demographics & reduced student population.

Irvine and IUSD is definitely overrated and the schools are crowded up to 30’plus kids per class and on top of that no diversity NONE. And I’m sure you like it like that if your Asian it is paradise here. All the white ple moved and took thier kids further South OC or private. Smh
