So our hunt for a house still continues..Exploring Serrano Heights in Orange now. Pretty much ruled out Yorba Linda as there isn't anything to do there in the way of night life and Ladera Ranch is still on our list albeit the power lines are an eye sore and every home has been way, way too close to those towers. Thought I'd find out thoughts on Serrano Heights. Thanks.

Hey, No_Vas. Cool map. How do you access that site to find other local maps? I tried altering the link to go up a directory and couldn't get anything. Thanks.

Vase, I think you mean this map. It clearly shows your favorite place in the hot zone. Not to mention a chunk of Irvine.

As is large swaths of OC. Detail maps of the rest of SoCal can be picked here.

What can I say? Being married to a civil engineer makes you avoid unreclaimed superfund sites and places where your home will eventually slide off the side of a hill.

My mom and dad moved into thier house in 1973 and still live there. It is my plan to make it my next move my last.

So when it's time to buy, which locations will you be looking at? I have Huntington Beach, parts of Costa Mesa, North Tustin, Eastside of Orange, Fullerton north of Chapman, and Brea on my radar screen.

That's a loaded question. If you'd asked me a month ago I'd of said North Tustin, Park Santiago, and Floral Park.

Today my answer is this home:

My Socal residency is on a ticking clock with an undetermined number of minutes till midnight strikes - and I move back to Pumpkinville.

You guys must have better than my 20/20, those maps make me dizzy. Are you guys seriously telling me that you use maps like this to choose where you are going to live? Sometimes I just think that life is too short for all of that crap. The time it seems like it takes no_vas to pick outdoor furniture is the time it took me to decide on my husband.

I told my wife "hey, lets go look at this home in Villa Park."

When she got home, she plotted it inside that map and said "Do you want to move WHEN the house slides - because eventually it will?" and that was the end of the conversation.

BTW, the USGS map link is courtesy of Mrs. Vas - I got the thanks but I don't deserve it. Thats mostly what she did all day at her old job - calculate maximum probable loss on structures using those maps. My wife is way smarter than me, I don't argue.

Neither does my husband.

I also look at the original grading plan because I will not buy a house that was built on fill.

Where do you find the original grading plan?

IMO there is some other drama (outside of the slope stablity issue) with Serrano Heights.

1. Disneyland fireworks. SH location in the canyon amplifies them. Big time. They are louder in the canyon than they are standing on the top of the Mickey and Friends parking garage. It really booms.

2. Traffic during peak hours. You are hemmed in by major traffic flows with people trying to cut through your neighborhood to head from 909ville to South OC.

3. Santa Anas. You will have the same issues with Santa Ana driven fires that YL did at some point, so plan accordingly.

4. Nightlife. What nightlife? It's the exact same as Yorba Linda, which you ruled out.

I think if I was interested in Serrano Heights, I'd explore OPA (Orange Park Acres) closer. With the exception of #4 (there's no nightlife in OPA either) all of the faults are either less or nonexistant compared to Serrano Heights.

Further, (and I may be assuming too much) it seems like you're looking for newer construction. If that's the case, Serrano Heights might be your best option.

In the office of the civil engineer who built the subdivision.

There should also be a copy at the municipality that approved it, and that one will be public record.

this piece of track looks interesting... the resolution on the quake zone map is too small, is it on it?

what are the major retail centers for Serrano Heights? looks like a good mix of old and new development.. never realy consider that part of town, but it is certainly more central than Ladera...
