Sorry RC for all you went through. It will give you enough resolve to be a very good parent to your children.
The young parents now who were lucky enough to be treated and raised well in their childhood will also remember those years fondly and know that that kind of parenting works for child's well-being. Overall, as generations pass we as a society will get better at parenting.
I say expect an A-game for effort from your child, encourage and help them with whatever they need to put up best effort. After that, no point in punishing for the results. If kid aces, celebrate. If the result is less than desirable, analyse and improve on weaknesses. In most cases, effort and results will correlate.
