The new iPhone 4 is HAWT!

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Alternatives to the App Store:

OpenAppMKThttp://www.openappmkt.com

It's a web-based repository for free and paid Web Apps (what originally ran on the 1st iPhone). Totally legal and not very populated yet but could build momentum for a cross-platform app store for Android, iPhone, Palm/webOS, WinPhone7 and Blackberry 6.

Or you can jailbreak it (search for jailbreakme). I don't support or discourage such actions and the DCMA has now ruled it legal... but you void your Apple warrany. I do hear however there is a whole new world out there for what you can do with a jailbroken phone.

Yeah I know!!  I don't know if I can wait that long.  iOS4 totally kills the performance on the older phone (my 3G).

There's supposedly a temp fix for that, turn off your Spotlight search settings and rebooting:

Settings > General > Home Button > Spotlight Search (uncheck all the options then power off and back on)

Let me know if that gets you some speed back. The reports have varied.

I was experiencing the same thing on my 3G, and turning Spotlight off made the speed a LOT better.  However, I still have to do a hard-reset from time to time because it starts to get slow again.

Depends on what area of Irvine you are in (closer to the 405 is better than Jamboree and the 5)... at least for AT&T.

As for Antennagate, if you aren't using a case (which you should... I recommend the free Incase Snap from the Free Case Program... which expires on 9/30 BTW)... just be careful how you hold the phone.

You know where I am, and it's horrible inside the home.  No reception until I got the Microcell tower.  Even with the tower, reception can go in and out.  I am still holding out to get the iphone 4 but not because of Antennagate but verizon.  My wife's verizon phone works perfectly inside the home.

For those who bought the iPhone 4, how is the reception around Irvine?

Should I worry about the "Antenna" issue?
Better than with my LG phone.  I can actually get a call inside my Oak Glen apartment.

I have Verizon and had bad reception in my house. Had to get a a Verizon femtocel--now things are much better at least for voice. I wish they offered a router that supported EVDO.

I too am waiting for Jan to roll around--we shall see about a Verizon Iphone. I am very doubtful. It is like waiting for the Irvine price crash--you hear about rumors every year but it has yet to come.  >:(

So now that the Jebus Phone 4 through Verizon is a lock come Q-1 2011, do you

A) Wait to upgrade your BB / Android until the dang thing arrives

B) Refuse to follow the hipsters now that Android phones are in some respects better than what Apple's done.

I'm waiting for the IPad v 2 to roll out. My guess is that it will be a true "all in one" machine with F/R cameras like the Jebus4 and Ipod Touch.

My next phone will be Android unless HP surprises me with a must-have webOS/Palm phone.

While I like webOS over Android... they have fallen behind in the app race and most developers are focusing on iOS, Android and the upcoming Windows Phone 7 (releasing later this month). Win7 Phones may hurt Palm even more and since new webOS phones won't be out until 2011... it doesn't look any better.

I'll probably eventually get a pad/tablet computer but it will either be running Windows 7 or Android 3.0 (Android 2.x is not really pad-optimized).

Still wondering how the VZW phone is going to handle CDMA since that can't do data/voice at the same time (which is what AT&T/Apple focuses on in the ad wars)... my assumption is that it is actually going to be an LTE phone since that coincides with VZW's 4G rollout through the end of year into the next.

And yes... I am a nerd... and proud.

At least you're not a "jargon-ista" - a person who knows the surface terms, but not what they mean.

Surprised that you like Palm OS as to me they seem like the AOL of this millenium.

Perhaps a dual chip phone in anticipation of Verizons 4G? The WSJ report said there was going to be the Verizon J4 phone and another product, a re-tooling of the ATT Iphone. Apple may be taking a cue from Google and flooding the market with variants (like HTC and their phones competing with Motorola)

The other problem with VZW is their cost. Their voice and data is probably the most expensive of the 4 carriers... if you go unlimited... it gets worse. And since they are now looking at switching to tiered data like AT&T... anyone switching will get the shaft and who knows if they will grandfather current unlimited data plans.

But VZW also has a great selection of Android phones... the upcoming Droid Pro (a Blackberry-keyboard-style phone that runs Android) is very tempting.

I think the retool is probably just the iPhone 5... Apple has to be working on it now if they plan to stick to their release cycle of summer.

BTW: The iPod Nano is horrible to me... why even make the Shuffle? They even removed the camera and video playback. They will probably find themselves going back to the previous form factor like they did prior to the last Nano generation (when they went short and wide).

I am still waiting for my white iPhone.
The iPhone 5 will come out before then.

Just iCarbons.com it:

I have a feeling they may be doing that antennae redo with the white one... might as well... to give the iSheeple even more reason to buy another phone less than 6 months later.

I am pretty sure Verizon will allow customers to upgrade early for the Iphone--I for one will drop my BB for it. I want to unify my ipod music into one device. I would also greatly appreciate the upgraded camera, video, and screen quality. I will miss my keyboard but that is something I am willing to sacrifice.

I am sure the android handset producers will also counter with new devices. IMHO I still haven't found a compelling alternative that I would get instead (yes I have played with the Droid X, Droid 2, HTC Incredible etc...).  I do appreciate the fierce competition since it gives consumers many options.

"Apple says the elusive white iPhone 4 will remain out of reach until spring.

Apple Inc.'s own "Apple Store" iPhone app lets people reserve products to pick up at local Apple stores. On Tuesday, bloggers posted screen shots of the app appearing to offer the option to reserve a white iPhone 4. By late afternoon, that option was no longer available.

Trudy Muller, an Apple spokeswoman, says the company is sorry to disappoint customers with another delay. She did not give reasons for the delay, but Apple said in July that the white models are "more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected."

Apple had hoped to make the phones available sometime late this year. The black version went on sale in June."

Poor fe9000... iCarbons or skinit.

Apple should just imitate what HTC does (and what they did with the 3G on up) and only make the back white.
