The name was pretty easy to come up with, it started off something similar to what you suggested and evolved into The 7C's IHB Cycling Club...of course, when we appear in TV interviews and special appearances we always use the full name, in Cycling Circles we're known as 7Cs', everyone knows who they're talking about, same as one never says Lance Armstrong, "Lance" is usually enough...



We're on the same level as Him now :coolsmirk:

acmpe, this is probably the easiest 50 miles you could possibly do, there's normally a wind which comes in from the Ocean which makes it nice, last time we did this ride it was in the 90's and it didn't feel bad at all....



It can be very Traficky in places but Vic does an amazing job of following and looking out for the back of the pack, we always stick together through the busy lane transitions etc and re-group several times throughout the ride...

we probably wont make it this sunday but hoping to try a backbay ride on saturday. hopefully we'll ride with the group next time around!

Outside of biking as a kid and occasionally renting beach cruisers for fun, I really have no experience in biking. Both the wife and I want to get into it given where we live and trying to be more fit (bored of the gyms). That being said, I have no idea how to pick a bike.



A buddy of mine suggested looking for used bikes but that seems even harder for someone without a clue. Any good rental places around where we can get a feel for different types of bikes? Our goal is to just bike around for fun every few days after work.
 
Hi RKP,

I would recommend going to REI (McFadden and 55) or Performance Bike (Tustin or Laguna Hills) to just check out some bikes. The staff at both companies are very friendly, and can answer a lot of your questions. I think the key thing is to buy a bike that's comfortable for you and your SO. Find a bike that's the right size, and professionally measured help out so much. My fiancee and I started riding casually last summer, and we were both on a beater bikes. However, the bikes were uncomfortable, and not made for long distance riding (IMO, any ride that's longer than 5-10 miles). Anyhow, my SO bought a nice K2 bike from REI, and had it measured for her height. Her riding experience improved significantly. I bought a really nice Trek bike on Craigslist about 2 months ago. The bike retails over $5k, and I was able to save quite a bit of money on the purchase.



If your goal is to bike around for fun, I would recommend going to a bike store and get your size measured, and either purchase entry level bikes or look up on Craigslist for a similar size bike. Good entry level road bikes are at least $400-$600 (used or sale/discount).



Lastly, if you ask nicely, I hear 1-800-PeterUK is a good hotline to call. :)
 
rkp, what type of riding to you envision yourselves doing? (envision: is that a word)?



Do you want to:



1. Ride the streets around the Neighbourhood or paved Bike Trails?

2. Ride off road on dirt trails?

3. Ride longer distances on the Street/paved Bike trails?



Or a combination of all 3?



As Vic said, if you buy a used Bike you need to know the correct size, this is very important, getting the wrong size bikes can be an expensive mistake...



Decent Bikes for any purpose cost upwards of $500 plus ~$100 worth of accessories.



But once you've made the initial outlay Biking can be a very inexpensive pastime....

PeterUK - I think we would like to do a combination of all 3 but mostly 1 and 3. I imagine majority of the time will be 1. My in-laws live above peters canyon and we see all sorts of bikers meet up and they tell us that they can pretty much ride all the way to Newport Beach without ever dealing with an intersection. Something like that sounds extremely fun!

We?re in agreement regarding Barca, need them to defeat United.

<span style="font-size: 13px;"><span style="color: purple;">The Shady Canyon Post-ride Report</span></span>



We had lovely weather for our Shady Canyon ride on Saturday. We were delighted to welcome new riders to the Club.

The ride got off to a bit of a rocky start. My tire took on some road debris and lost. PeterUK utilized the incident as a teachable moment, so I now know how to change a tire. It didn't take long at all, and we were rolling once again. Shady Canyon is a beautiful ride with a few nice hills and lots of spectacular vistas. It is a favorite route for the Club, so watch this thread for announcements of more upcoming rides. The more, the merrier!

Profette is right, the weather was perfect for the ride and of course it's always great when new IHB'ers ride with us.



Next week I have a Triathalon, Drive/Ride/Fly. The first event starts at 4:30 am, an 85 mile drive up to Thousand Oaks followed by a 106 mile Bike ride , the Grand Tour of Canejo with 6500 ft of climbing, then, I'm flying to Las Vegas for the night so it's going to be quite a Day :coolgrin:

Sorry rkp, I missed this post but it sounds like you should be looking at a Hardtail Mountain Bike (not full suspension). Or even a Hybrid which is mad for the street and light offroad riding.

A Road Bike is specifically for riding on paved trails such as the Backbay and Streets....



I would highly suggest Performance Bike, you can find them at performancebike.com, they have a store in Tustin Market place and a bigger one on Alicia and Hon in Laguna Hills, they have more choice.



They also have great prices on Helmets, accessories and riding apparel...
