What drives a lot of this homelessness is the cost of housing. A half time job at $6/hour only gets around $500 a month, which will just about pay for a room in many metropolitan areas. Even in the Inland Empire I had to spend $425 for half of a 2-bedroom, and the clerk at the U-Haul when I moved out thought that was cheap! And of course people have to eat first and after that there's not even that left.
