<p>Here's my philosophy about "conspicuous consumption": Buy it if you can afford it. If you can't, don't buy it.</p>
<p>I don't have a beachfront mansion, Ferrari, and a Patek Phillipe not because I think they are a waste of money and snooty, I don't have them because I can't afford them. I don't see anything wrong with buying things you can afford. With my salary, I know what I can afford and what I can't. I can afford a $50K car, but I can't afford a $100K car. I can afford a $2000 watch, but not a $10000 one. I can afford a $1000 suit, but not a $2500 suit. So I don't buy the latter. But I do buy the former, because I can without having to pinch. There is so much talk about "looking rich" when you can't afford it. But what about "looking poor" when you CAN afford it? If I can afford a $2000 watch, shouldn't I LOOK like I can afford a $2000 watch? But if you buy a kit Ferrari, aren't you just looking like you CAN afford a Ferrari, when you really can't? Then it IS just all about image.</p>
