So i went through a few quotes to get 5.1 in my house.. no thanks.. Just not worth a couple Ks for watching a few movies a month, if that.

I'm going to be buying a soundbar.  I liked the Bose ones the most.. but none of them have the HDMI inputs that I want.  So it's down to Yamaha and Definitive Technology.

Any good reviews out there?

http://www.avsforum.com for all your audio/visual needs.  Those geeks know everything.

If he mentions Bose and soundbars there they will crucify him.

That's the thing with these geek sites.. they just don't get it.  It's like the same guys that love android and hate apple.  Sometimes people like something simple yet good quality.  I've been on the site many time for reviews..  Most of the stuff just flows over my head and they nit pick on everything (good and bad I guess).  Would just like some normal every day casual TV/movie/sports watchers make recommendations.

Don't look at me then lol, I'm an AVSForum regular. The day I get my keys in September I'm having installers hookup wiring for 6 overhead in ceiling speakers and 2 side surrounds for a Dolby Atmos 7.1.4 system (11 speakers and a subwoofer). Would not use a soundbar if you paid me thousands a year.

What is the cost for all that?

yeah.. can't ask an audiophile about soundbars.  It's like asking a video guy about Plasmas or LCDs.

Sounds kind of pricey.

They said around a $100 per wiring job.

Who are you using?

I got a quote for $2500 to install 5 speakers and patching the walls up.  too many holes and too many dollars.

Nice!  Curious to see how they run the wires.

Two guys from there came over yesterday to look at the place. They will patch up and retexture but they don't paint. I'll probably just paint it myself since I'm not worried about getting the place messy cause the next day my contractor is going to rip out the carpet for hardwood floors.

How big is your room? I'm moving into a Jasmine Plan 3 with conservatory and it's about 5200 cubic feet and I sit 17 feet away from the TV and speakers. Even if I wanted a soundbar it would be working awfully hard in such a big room.

If on budget, everyone seems to like the Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers:

Pretty much any cheap speaker system will sound better than the most expensive soundbars. It's just physics.

@jmoney74:

You and me are in the same boat... we just want it loud.

You can pretty much go with any soundbar/sub (some have a built-in sub in the soundbar but I prefer the separate sub). Even the <$200 ones are decent enough for us guys that are tone deaf.

I bought the Sammy to match my TV. The Vizio at Costco is on sale for about $200 and that one also has 2 satellite speakers (but you don't have to use them).

I find just the bar and sub is good enough... but I never felt the need to put a carpeted Kicker box in the trunk of my car. At any rate, it's better than the TV speakers.

I like it louder and rich.  Seems like only a few can deliver that (Yamaha, definitive, bose).. at least for the mainstream players.

They didn't charge to come out and look. They said $100 per wiring for each speaker on a wall or ceiling.
