Uri Segal was playing gin rummy with his family several years ago when his 16-year-old daughter Maayan asked him a question: Why is the king worth more than the queen?

The question has turned into a full-blown deck of cards, "Queeng," now in its second edition. The cards feature multi-ethnic figures, and men and women are equal.

Playing cards aren't the only thing that's gotten a makeover. Barbie has more than 35 skin tones, 94 hairstyles and 9 body types on shelves today, and Potato Head recently made headlines by going gender neutral.

Toy manufacturers, pop-up libraries, book publishers and more are making strides when it comes to diversity and inclusion, and as a result the next generation has more offerings than ever that promote representation.

Scrabble has banned racial slurs from scoring points on the family favourite board game ? to the ire of libertarians and scrabble players.

In total, over 400 dictionary defined terms have vanished from the game after one of Scrabble?s owners, Mattel, said there are no other games where players ?can win by using a racial epithet?.

There is no one list of the banned terms, but online Scrabble check websites allow players to type in a word to see if it can be played.

Various slurs against black, Pakistani, Irish and white people have been axed but some offensive terms against Australian aboriginal communities are still valid, according to one campaigner.

British author Darryl Francis resigned from the World English-Language Scrabble Players Association (WESPA) because he said Mattel had forced the changes on the game.

In the Name of Equity, California Will Discourage Students Who Are Gifted at Math
The new framework aims to keep everyone learning at the same level for as long as possible.

California's Department of Education is working on a new framework for K-12 mathematics that discourages gifted students from enrolling in accelerated classes that study advanced concepts like calculus.

The draft of the framework is hundreds of pages long and covers a wide range of topics. But its overriding concern is inequity. The department is worried that too many students are sorted into different math tracks based on their natural abilities, which leads some to take calculus by their senior year of high school while others don't make it past basic algebra. The department's solution is to prohibit any sorting until high school, keeping gifted kids in the same classrooms as their less mathematically inclined peers until at least grade nine.

"The inequity of mathematics tracking in California can be undone through a coordinated approach in grades 6?12," reads a January 2021 draft of the framework. "In summary, middle-school students are best served in heterogeneous classes."

As usual, the unintended consequence will be to actually create more inequity as more parents choose private school. Even if they stay in public school parents will just continue to supplement with tutoring.

The course ran for 15 weeks and saw students attempting to overturn what was described as ?racial biases built in tech? and instead developing ?actively anti-racist solutions?.

Students were tasked to ?build and test systems that embrace anti-racism as a core value.?

The idea that faulty soap dispensers are a signifier of institutional racism has been pushed by Ruha Benjamin, Princeton professor of African American Studies in her book Race After Technology: Abolitionist Tools for the New Jim Code which posits that ?emerging technologies can reinforce White supremacy and deepen social inequity.?
