shoe repair shop

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I've used the shop next to L&L on Culver and Walnut.  I think the owner's name is Chan or Yang or maybe Chan Yang.  He's super friendly and will find ways to help you restore your shoes without doing anything unnecessary.  I was happy with the couple of pair of shoes he worked on.

I've always wondered how these shoe repair shops stay open.

I guess because I buy cheap shoes I don't need that type of service, I just throw them away and buy another pair.

I think this is the shop next to Radio Shack on Culver, in same plaza as Mitsuwa and Daiso.  He does a decent job with shoe repairs and dyes, but so-so with washing/cleaning tennis shoes.  You can also go to him to repair zippers and such.

I buy ECCO shoes and they're mid-range priced at $100-$200 retail, less at outlets.  It's worth the $15-$20 for repairs.

They're a dying breed because the new comfort-tech type soles are more expensive than the shoe unless you're buying $200+ shoes.

Plus the popular 'dress' shoes now are basically cr*p.

I understand that for expensive shoes... but isn't there some point it time where they are worn out to a point that it's better to just buy new ones.

My shoes run in the $50 range... I replace them about every two years (3-6 months for basketball shoes).

A nice pair of rebuildable/refurbishable Goodyear welt construction shoes will last you a lifetime.  The pair of dress shoes I dropped off with Chan/Yang/Chan Yang cost me $500.00....15 years ago.  I think I dropped it off with him 5 years ago, so it lasted 10 years before needing to be resoled.  The uppers are still in good condition, so I think it could be in service for another 10 years.  Spreading the initial cost and the cost of resole over 15 years, I come out ahead of buying a pair of cheaper 100~200.00 glued sole shoes every 2 to 3 years.

He'll do a sole replacement for $20?

When I find a deal for my dress shoes, I go Monk style and buy a bunch of the same exact style and just replace them when worn out.

+1. Although, Homer, I do commend you for seeing to it that you're put together properly. It could be worse. You could walk around in rags until your wife dresses you.... like, um, somebody else I know. That's no fun.
