Sheriff Carona to be indicted on Public Corruption Charges

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Regarding Haidl....so what did he essentially do, "buy" that job ? I figured he had been a police officer that had made it up through the ranks.

<p>>>I figured he had been a police officer that had made it up through the ranks.</p>

<p>Nope he was a used car salesman who was "close" to Carona and Corona appointed him an assistant in charge of the reserve program. This place is so provincial sometimes.</p>

haidl basically funded carona's first campaign for sheriff. when they won, he became carona's #2. he had no legitimate experience for the job. actually they took the boys club concept to a whole new, dangerous level. they created a "professional services deputies" program which was basically a way to award political donors with badges and in many cases, licenses to carry concealed weapons.

not surprisingly there have been a number of instances where these pseudo credentials have been used irresponsibly. carona deputized his tae kwon do instructor and the guy flashed his badge and threatened to shoot some golfers at a club one day because they were playing too slow. a local restaureur was under investigation after flashing the badge during a parking lot dispute. another newport businessman caused a ruckus at the airport during an argument with airline staff over his luggage, then flashed the badge claiming he was a member of the sheriff's dept. and of course, the driver of that infamous ferrari enzo crash also had one of these badges. la county sheriff found a gun at his house belonging to another so-called oc deputy.

using the office of sheriff for financial gain is what's takign him down but this has always been far more worrisome imo. this sort of corruption literally puts people in harms way.

<p>Wow, I had no idea how bad it was. I hate cronyism....</p>

<p><em><strong>"Cronyism</strong> is partiality to long-standing friends, especially by appointing them to positions of authority, regardless of their qualifications. Hence, cronyism is contrary in practice and principle to </em><a title="Meritocracy" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meritocracy"><em>meritocracy</em></a><em>. Cronyism exists when the appointer and the beneficiary are in social contact; often, the appointer is inadequate to hold his or her own job or position of authority, and for this reason the appointer appoints individuals who will not try to weaken him or her, or express views contrary to those of the appointer". Yeah, sometimes I wonder why I do this job anymore....it's pretty thankless. But at least I do it for the right reasons.
