i have dropcams/nestcams. love them.

I noticed the cloud fee for dropcam is significantly more than foscam. Also, foscam you have an option to store the video or image on sd card, but dropcam no.

There are software that uses your laptops hard drive to store foscam recordings.  I use a dedicated old laptop for that purpose.  Cheaper than nestcams monthly fee, though not as user friendly.

Do you have the pan tilt foscam?

I have Dlink (couple of DCS-932L and DCS-942L).

I also have the Camera Video Recorder (DNR-202L) --> this is really not necessary as Dlink camera can record directly to NAS or hard drive connected to the router, but the DNR makes viewing recorder video easier especially remotely as well as centralized setup/viewing instead of having to login to each camera (without it, the camera will just ftp files and files of recording to the hard drive and you will have to open each file to view).  This can control up to 4 cameras.

Yeah, setup is a bitch though, only got 2 out of 3 to work, I think a flash upgrade bricked one of the cameras.

My other dilemma is how many to get and where to place them.

I originally started with one Dlink (DCS-942L). I put them facing the front door porch basically to watch over the packages left by couriers (and see those who drop leaflets and all).  The 942L has SD card so it can record locally and ftp the video to a NAS drive for redundancy (so if the camera is taken, I have a NAS copy.. or if the NAS connection is down, I have the SD copy).  You can watch the video on the SD card via mydlink app.  After several months with decent performace, I added another one to face the driveway/sideyard so that we know who passes by that area.  Then added two indoors .. Then finally added the Camera recorder (DNR-202L) as its a pain to have to adjust setting and view the cameras separately.

Based on experience, setup is pretty straightforward and no monthly fee whatsoever as you are mostly in control of it (their setup menu has a lot of technical options and setup that you can tweak, but don't need most of them)

Man... this Irvine crime wave must have you guys spooked.

I understand why qwervoyeur does it, he lives in Tustin and he loves to watch his dogs (and to make sure yaliu doesn't snag one).

Is anyone concerned about getting their cams hacked?

Only use Foscam inside your firewall unless you want to share your feed to the world. Fine for a baby monitor but not so great for when away from home.

Speaking of Yaliu, does Yaliu have security cameras? (After the ghost/cemetery issue, he should think about getting a 8 to 16 channel security system)  ;)

I seriously considered getting the nest cam before this year's vacation but the 5-day delivery option and its price tag changed my mind.

The video clip from eyephone's post looks not so convincing. If the characters knew there was a cam in the house, they would've worn masks. I don't think the video would have helped homeowner, the police or the prosecutor in the court in most cases.

If I were in the vicinity, do I really want to confront the guys on my own? No way. If I were away on vacation, I had to dial the local police. What are the chances that they could get there on time?

I'm not concerned about getting my Dropcam/Nest Cam hacked.

I'm considering placing cameras on the exterior of my home. Does anyone have a good system they'd recommend?

- Nest does not make an outdoor camera. There are 3rd party housings that can be purchased though. But if I put a number of Nest cams on the exterior, that is going be an issue with my internet connection (current uplink is ~5 Mbps).
- Are there good options that store locally on a Mac or NAS?
- Wired or wireless? Separate network?
- DIY or not?

If Qwerty's Dropcan ever got hacked, you probably going to see the video on the internet.

Just search under the word "hung" :)

I'd spend the $ on professional alarm system and heavy duty safe bolted to the floor/wall studs first.  Most safes on the market today actually suck and can be cracked open by dropping on the floor at an angle, or with simple hand tools/pry bar.

Professional burglers spend quite a bit of effort casing your place.  The pro's work with house cleaners, gardners, delivery service, door to door "salesman", and even outcall escorts to gain information on your home.  If you have an alarm system that they're unable to bypass, it would at least deter or limit their time inside your home.  If not, then they might arrive in a moving truck with everyone dressed as movers to clean out your entire home.

One of the best deterrance is to get to know your neighbors, who will call you on your cell phone (or the cops) if they see something not normal.
