You can't get a Mont Blanc fountain pen for less than $100. I would recommend the rubber finish Starwalker pen, looks nicer than the usual "precious resin" models. Also, only fools buy at the MB store at South Coast Plaza and pay retail and tax; smart people go to an Asian jewler (i.e. Chong Hing), pay cash, no tax, and get 30% off.</blockquote>

As I stated, the Mont Blanc fountain pen would make a terrific and memorable gift.

You seem to agree.

Which style and where you purchase it is irrelevant.

Just because someone chooses to shop/buy at the MB store in South Coast doesn?t make them a fool.

That?s your interpretation.

I have a Meisterstuck platinum and prefer it over the one you mentioned.</blockquote>

Which style of Mont Blanc pen is extremely relevant. I don't think a ruby encrusted pen from the Boheme collection would be appropriate for a 22 year old young man. However, meisterstuck's are too common these days, it is the HP12C of pens, like a cliche. I have received meisterstucks as holiday gifts from various financial consultants and law firms; I think PriceWaterhouseC must buy and send them out by the thousands. Therefore, I would not give something so common to commemorate a special occasion. Also, I only suggest a Mont Blanc because I assume SoCal's nephew is not an enthusiast and would therefore appreciate someting cool looking like a Starwalker, if he were an enthusiast, I'd suggest something like a vintage Parker 51.

To not knowingly overpay for something is not my interpretation, it is my subjective opinion although I believe I can make a pretty good case that it is an objectively reasonable opinion.

I don?t consider purchasing a pen at the MB store as knowingly over paying.

Nor do I have a problem with you saying that to save some money buy it at Chong Hing or some other place where you can work a deal.

People?s preferences are different.

I made a gift recommendation and laid out my own personal preference.

You laid out your preference, just because it?s different than mine doesn?t make me foolish and you smarter.

I wear Hermes ties, you may prefer another brand or not even wear a tie.

It?s all about personal taste, not putting down another person?s choice of style or where they choose to purchase.

I actually like Ten's idea.

Like he said, it's a memorable gift that he'll have for awhile and he'll remember you gave it to him.

A gift card will be gone in a day.

My husband still has a pen his cousin gave him twenty years ago, and he still uses it to this day.

I'm sure he can't remember the other cash gifts he received.

Oh, and a nice touch is to have the pen engraved with his initials.

I'm not sure if you can engrave on Mont Blanc or not, but other pens I know you can.

Plus, some he'll have an easier time holding on to it, and some girlfriend won't "steal" it from him.

[quote author="SoCal78" date=1223681399]My 22 year-old nephew just graduated college and moved out here (to Huntington Beach) from out of state. I want to get him something as a congratulations / welcome-to-the-area gift (nothing more than $100.) Any ideas on what a young guy would like best? I was thinking maybe tickets to a concert at House of Blues but I don't know what he likes. Maybe a gift card to a restaurant - if so, where? He seems to already have enough things for his new apartment. Any ideas are appreciated.</blockquote>
If his vehicle does not have a navigation system, get him a Thomas Guide. He's going to need it. Every time he's lost, he'll think of you with good thoughts. Remember, guys can't ask for directions... It a rule!

He's 22? A weekend suite at Palm's Place, VEGAS. :)

Unless you're on a budget....then a $100 Gas Card (should cover a trip from OC to LV) and detailed directions on how to book a suite at www.lasvegas.com
