My 22 year-old nephew just graduated college and moved out here (to Huntington Beach) from out of state. I want to get him something as a congratulations / welcome-to-the-area gift (nothing more than $100.) Any ideas on what a young guy would like best? I was thinking maybe tickets to a concert at House of Blues but I don't know what he likes. Maybe a gift card to a restaurant - if so, where? He seems to already have enough things for his new apartment. Any ideas are appreciated.

When I graduated college, I received nothing but cash. And I think thats what he would like best. It is hard to think of something right on the spot that I want, but then I see it somewhere and then I remember.

Other things I liked that I received from people who didn't want to give cash: Itunes Gift Card, Costco Cash card, or maybe just like an Irvine Spectrum cash card.

Another nice idea is maybe a subscription to blockbuster online. I got both my sisters (they are closer to 30 though) a 3 month subscription to that for Christmas last year and they loved it. After thier 3 months was up, they got their own subscription and still have it now.

I think a cool idea would be something that gets him started at a nice restaurant like Morton's or Ruth's Criss (I'm a steak guy). Sure he may have to pitch in some of his own money if he brings a date, but at least that way he'll find out what its like. I never went to those places growing up and would probably still never have experienced what they are like without someone giving me a giftcard first.

How about a Gas Card... believe me, he'll appreciate it. Or maybe a gift card to get some clothes.

Otherwise i'm a cash type person....

Funny you should say that. His mom is Mexican and that whole side of his family is still there. His dad is my brother - they have a vacation home there in San Luis Potosi. It is already his home away from home.

I like all of your suggestions. The gas card sounds good. He just bought a new truck so that will come in handy. 24inirvine - thanks for the great tips and about the steakhouses. What do you think of Ralph Brennan's Jazz Kitchen at Downtown Disney? Although it's not primarily a steakhouse they do serve steak but the restaurant is in a festive atmosphere and they have a patio/balcony overlooking the action live music.

no_vas and IR2: A flask and the number to a precarious girl. Got it. That will surely win me the Aunt-Of-The-Year award (but maybe not from his father.) LOL.

To be honest, I am not really a fan of fancy restaurants unless they serve a la carte. I'm a big eater and it seems like the more expesnvie you go, the smaller the entrees you get and the wierder the sides get.

Last time, I went to downtown Disney I ate at Catal and the only thing I really liked was the meat (I had the duck) but if I was paying the bill, I would never eat there again.

I've never been to the Jazz Kitchen, or have even heard of it til now. I think it depends on the type of food he is into and the music he is into. From what I can tell from the pictures, it does look like an interesting place and since he is not from around here maybe it would be cool to send him there since he could then explore the downtown disney area. When its a gift, I don't really mind trying new places cause I probably wouldn't of thought of ever going there myself. So many restaurants out there I have never heard of. If he is a sports guy, the ESPN Zone wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I believe the question was, "What would he like best?" not "What would be best for him?"

btw, I'm a victim of my own crime. I can't get the Jenny song outta my head now. D'oh!

I'm with you on Catal Restaurant / Uva bar. I went there just once for my first and last time. That's how much I enjoyed it.

[quote author="tenmagnet" date=1223682534]A Mont Blanc fountain pen would be a very thoughtful and nice gift.

I received one and continue to use it.</blockquote>

You can't get a Mont Blanc fountain pen for less than $100. I would recommend the rubber finish Starwalker pen, looks nicer than the usual "precious resin" models. Also, only fools buy at the MB store at South Coast Plaza and pay retail and tax; smart people go to an Asian jewler (i.e. Chong Hing), pay cash, no tax, and get 30% off.

I'd get him some custom engraved stationery from Cranes (South Coast Plaza) that he can use for resumes, cover letters, and love letters.

As I stated, the Mont Blanc fountain pen would make a terrific and memorable gift.

You seem to agree.

Which style and where you purchase it is irrelevant.

Just because someone chooses to shop/buy at the MB store in South Coast doesn?t make them a fool.

That?s your interpretation.

I have a Meisterstuck platinum and prefer it over the one you mentioned.
