Bad/Overpriced Mexican food is on the decline.
La Sirena Grill is doing well. Chipotle (not real Mexican) is doing excellently as well.

Rice Vino said:El Cholo and On the Border closing. And mostly white people at places like Super Mex... Mexican food on the decline in Irvine? Seems like there is demographic problem for the cuisine.
SoCal said:What is Chipotle similar to? I'm the only person on the planet who has actually never been to Chipotle (even though there is one right by my house). Is it like Rubio's? Or more like El Torito.
Rice Vino said:we debate quality but bottom line is OTB and el cholo are mexican cuisine. and there is less of it getting served in Irvine now vs. last year. if there is demand for "good mexican", are there more of these restaurants displacing the "bad mexican"? La Sirena is much smaller. I say Asian don't consume as much mexican food.

Because people don't want to go out of their comfort zone. (Who knows)

Traditional Mexican restaurants are very different from California style Mexican (On the Border, Baja Fresh, Chipotle, etc...) It like comparing traditional Chinese restaurant with PF Chang's.

And why would anyone want to eat at PF Changs or Panda Express when you have better food a hop, skip, and a step away?
Well, I guess I already know the answer to that. The palette jump from Panda to authentic is quite far for many people.
So have fun eating at On the Border, I hear that their tortilla chips are really authentic!
