Well now IUSD has a blueprint on how to open new schools and get them to be highly rated. Here's hoping they do the same with great park elementary and portola springs elementary!!

Don't worry bones - if your kids don't get into Harvard just let me know. At USC they take alumni recommendations very seriously. I'm highly confident I can get your kids in :-)

I don't know Irvine kids will have the street smart to handle the USC neighborhoods south of MLK. At least at close proximity mommy and daddy could go to rescue or do laundry or pack foods in Tupperwares.

This should help flagging sales at Arcadia and only increase the crush of students trying to get into SG.

As a parent, I wouldn't put too much weight into these rankings. It still comes down to the individual student's character, parental involvement, and good teachers. Simply being in one of these schools is no guarantee for admission to an IVY or a meaningful/successful life.

I thought that Irvine parents did not value "socio-economic diversity" at their schools / neighborhoods? That's what it seems like reading TI posts over the years. Folks worried about where the low-income housing is. The higher the rating, the broader the scope. So, Stonegate is #1. Is that cause for celebration or not? A larger number i.e. lower score should be more desirable for the people who were concerned. OC Register's ideals may not match yours.

"Diversity: The Register calculates the balance of each school's ethnic, racial and socio-economic student groups, based on state student data. These are ranked 1 -- the best -- through 379. Schools that had their enrollment made up of the widest range of ethnic/racial and socioeconomic students groups rated higher than others." Link

USC?  THAT would be my worst nightmare.  Haha - all kidding aside, shouldn't I find a more distinguished alum to do the recommendations?  :P

Well, I can't argue with that :-)

I know plenty of people who are extremely successful in personal and professional realms who didn't achieve that kind of "academic pedigree".

i equate the academic pedigree to a head start but over the long run the cream will rise to the top, regardless of academic pedigree.

Having personally gone through that kind of intense entrance exam public high school to Ivy League undergrad to Ivy League grad school pathway, I don't think it should be the Holy Grail that some people make it out to be. 10-20 years out from school, my alma mater never comes up in everyday conversations, no one really cares, and I know plenty of people who are extremely successful in personal and professional realms who didn't achieve that kind of "academic pedigree".

just my .02.

I feel like we should know each other.  I'm also nyc to oc and knew tons of ppl who did entrance exam HS (Stuy/bronx science/brooklyn tech).  I agree with what you're saying but not sure what you mean by "good".  I personally wouldn't NOT send my kid to Northwood or Uni and instead send them to a school 150 spots down the ranking list just b/c I didn't like the pressure cooker environment.  That's selling both my kid short and my parenting short.

I agree, I'm not saying I would send my kid to a school 150 spots down the rank list either. But there are good schools outside of Irvine too. Places like North Tustin, Tustin Ranch, Villa Park, Anaheim Hills, and Newport where the houses are arguably much nicer (to my view at least), and with the exception of Newport, more affordable than Irvine.  Of course, this is the talkirvine website here, so discussion is going to be centered on Irvine housing. I'm just saying that there is more than just Irvine schools out there, and guess what, if the parents care about their kids education and are pretty educated themselves, then chances are decent the kids will turn out OK.
