OC Register: Great Park Proposals

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I've been following this... the most interesting one is that they want to get rid of the 4 independent board members and keep it an Irvine-only board.

The argument for is because it's on Irvine land, paid for by Irvine and staffed by Irvine, the planning for it should be by Irvine interests. The argument against this is that Measure W which approved a regional park instead of an airport was voted on by Orange County residents, not just Irvine, so there should be some influence by non-Irvine people.

I'm a bit torn on this issue... since I can see both sides of it.

I think its time the Great Park changes their slogan to "The first great metropolitan park of the 22nd century."  Its been over a decade since measure w passed and all they have to show for it is a giant balloon and some houses that might selling this year...Frankly, I lost interest a few years ago when they nixed the golf course in favor of more residential.

So is more residential planned in the great park surrounding area, close to Portola Springs? I heard there will be a new high school built there.

IUSD is building an K-6 in PS, a K-8 year-round in Heritage Fields (Great Park) and a High School in Heritage Fields as well.  Don't know how zoning will play out for that HS, but I'll be pretty upset if Stonegate is included it in...One of the major selling points of the community was that it is zoned for Northwood High School. As an Irvine Unified high school, I'm sure that HFHS will be up there eventually, but it would sure piss a lot of people off if they bought a house particularly for a school and then got rezoned before their kids got to high school.

i cant see a scenario where Portola, Stonegate and Woodbury dont get rezoned to the new heritage high school. and what they will probably do is grandfather kids in that have already started at another high school.

Agreed.  If you bought in Portola Springs or Stonegate thinking your kid was gonna go to Northwood High...think again.  Heritage HS will be fine.  People need to stop being so neurotic.  Probably a plus for Woodbury.

I'm definitely not neurotic about the schools...those days of having to care about schools in our house are long gone :)  In fact, I've long advocated among friends to send their kids to Woodbridge...not having to be exposed to those levels of competition makes for a better learning environment in my opinion...It's been about a decade since I bothered looking, but even with the divide in rankings between Uni and WHS/IHS back in the late 90's and early 2000's, acceptance rates into top tier universities, including the UCs, were not really that different between the 3 high schools.

That said though, as someone who might want to sell a house he just bought in about 7-8 years, I think there is a difference between it being zoned to the #1 API ranked HS in the city and a newly constructed high school with no established track record yet...

I think it depends on the residents in the zone more than whether it's new or old. So I'm more concerned about what kind of neibourhood they will be building in the Great Parks area in the next 5 years. If subsidized, oriented to low income, then I'd stay away from that zone. If nice neibourhood, then I'm not worried. I think there's a little sign of low income oriented, not sure though.

Any one waiting to buy at the great park, you should just come down to Tustin legacy, we just have regular contamination, not a superfund site  :)

don't worry. Lennar will make sure the yard is so small that gardening is not practical. And they will just copy the disclaimer from Tustin Legacy (see my signature).

Test has commented on the toxic plume in Woodbridge multiple times... and now that Lyon has a new development there... in north Woodbridge... I wanted to know what his/her take is on it and if they have to sign disclosure documents.
