[quote author="graphrix" date=1215665143][quote author="stepping_up" date=1215662256]We wouldn't be wanting to build on it for 20 years, so that's why I thought it might be prudent to get one now. The idea was to build our retirement house on it. $75K with an ocean view and a long wait seemed like it could be a good thing for us.

If I had $75k, that I would be comfortable tying up for 20 years, then I would buy a lot there in a heartbeat. Mmmm... that just gave me an idea.

That's why I was thinking about the self directed IRA. If we moved IRA money into one of those accounts, it can be used to purchase real estate. I'm not sure if the return on this lot would be as good as the market over a 20 year period though. And again, it would put so much of our investments in RE. I really would like to talk to a professional about this. Any recommendations?

See no-vas's new thread for more re: Cambria's water. It's not a waiting list, it's a lottery, and no new water connections have been offered by the water district in at least 3 years.

Here is a post explaining the geographical divisions in Santa Ana. It is sliced up into 6 "Wards" and each "Ward" has a council representative.

The northern most rep is Carlos Bustamante who just got his hands slapped for making public sexist comments. Not a huge deal, but he lost a couple of appointments by Arnold as a result.

WHERE you live and who represents you is immensely important in OC cities, imo.

I have to say, Mr. Bustamante has a very interesting resume. It seems that he has gotten some really great top jobs with the County even though it appears he does not have experience in the particular subject matter. Perhaps his bio on the Santa Ana website left something out.

RE Carlos Bustamante, here is a summary from the OC Weekly. ( I actually enjoy the OCWeekly very much - they have fun writers and they have interesting suggestions on dining etc..)

In part ~Snip~~

Carlos Bustamante was supposed to be the Golden Boy, the Mexican who could deliver Latinos to the Republican Party in Orange County. He won a SanTana City Council seat in 2004 by defeating a Papi Pulido-backed candidate in the one OC city where Democrats rule, and the dreaming started immediately..................... And Bustamante did--he ran for an open seat in the 2007 First Supervisorial District special election, backed by his buddies in the Hispanic 100 and the old money of theLincoln Club and the new represented by Generation Next. With the support of those three, the smart money went, the OC GOP would have its best Great Brown Hope since Gaddi Vasquez.

Alas, it was not to be--because their boy Bustamante is a complete baboso.

Despite all the money, Bustamante finished in fourth place--this despite his SanTana council seat, his Hispanic surname, and the fact the First has a shitload of wab voters. But the future didn't seem finished for Bustamante--he was appointed by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to the California Council on Criminal Justice and was awaiting approval for a spot on the Fair Employment and Housing Commission, a slot maneuvered by Schwarzenegger's appointment secretary, Hispanic 100 member John Cruz.

All of this is gone because Bustamante is a baboso. Last month, Bustamante cracked some stupid joke regarding breast implants and a water bra about newly appointed Orange County Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, and good-minded folks went wacko. Bustamante at first denied the remarks, but now all he's doing is resigning from the two commissions. He cited the excuse of new responsibilities at his job, but when was the last time a "rising" politician declines to move up the ladder? Now, Bustamante shall forever be known on this blog as Busty Bustamante for being such a baboso. Now, the GOP's Great Brown Hope is congressional candidate Rosemarie Avila, the most-toxic prospective representative since Tan Nguyen. Now, Busty can do no better than run for reelection this year to the SanTana City Council.

For those of you looking for a deal in West Floral Park, check out 1908 Westwood. Aames Lending would like to hear from you, and they are offering this home at $160 / sq ft. It need modernizing, and I don't know if this is a 2/2, or if the County messed up the bed/bath count, or if there was some unpermitted work (who would do such a thing?!?), but if one were willing to spruce it up, it could be a good deal.

HGTV is currently looking for Floral Park homes to feature:

My name is Holly and I am a producer with HGTV's real estate show "My House is Worth What?" Our show is shooting in Orange County soon and we're trying to find some homes in the Floral Park neighborhood to feature. We?re very interested in finding homes with character and charm to feature. I have some co-workers who are familiar with Floral Park and they suggested I look at your website and the neighborhood looks beautiful so we?d love to find a home or two there to highlight. In the past I?ve gotten some good leads from Home & Garden clubs in the communities we?ve chosen to focus on. Basically we need to find homes that have been updated, remodeled, renovated etc. during the time in which the present owners have lived there. The purpose of the show is to take a look at how changes to your home can affect the value. We bring in a local real estate expert (Realtor) to go through the home with the homeowner and give feedback on what they?ve done, the amount they invested, and ultimately the current value. If the homeowners have any questions about other improvement they have in mind then the Realtor will advise them whether or not they should make the investment.

. . . I?d like to contact all interested homeowners by July 18.

Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks!

I was researching crime statistic and most of the gang related incidents have occurred between Main and Grand (east-west) Edinger and Warner (north-south) boundary. A majority of the gangs' family homes fall into this zone . This grid is only 1-1/4 miles from VOC and almost 3 miles to North Santa Ana. The perception of boundary is much better defined separating VOC from the crime location by having to driving under the 55 fwy and having different landscape and street treatment even though the distance is twice as close to the crime neighborhoods. Landscape design and mand made separators can create an illusion of distance and better boundary. VOC is much closer but feels safer while North Santa Ana is farther but perceived less safe.

Good streetscape design is a powerful tool to create a sense of safety and defensible space as is illustrated here.

Realtors are not investment advisors, and if they were they would have education requirements, difficult tests to pass, and not nearly as many in the business.

Agree. TV always over simplified and mislead the public the true role of the profession presented. Aside from HGTV, I love Extreme Makeovers but those guys like Ty and the girls did not really build those houses and their role and responsibility have been overly dramatized.
