I agree Carmax is good to go to sell your car.

I think CarMax is a sham.  I got a quote from Carmax and walked away.  I was able to sell to a private party for 3x the amount that CarMax quoted me.

While I was waiting for the quote, I looked at their kiosk for pricing of re-sales.  I had just purchased a new vehicle.  The were selling the same exact car, but one year older, for $1,000 more than what I had paid for brand-new.

I mentioned this to the salesman and he smiled and said a lot of people don't really do their research.

CarMax is all about supply and demand.  If there's a high demand for your car, in my experience, CarMax gives more than fair offers for your cars.  Mostly Japanese cars like (Toyota Honda) with low mileage and high end European performance cars get the best offers.  A car like a basic 3 or 5 series/c class (non amg) would probably be really low ball offers since they sit on lots for a while.

Of course you can get more through private sell.

Last night I went to a dealership and they gave me half of what carmax offered me.

Thinking it over. I might try to sell my car. Haha

Agreed. My dad looked at the price CarMax was offering and figured he basically paying $1k for the convenience of selling his 5 series to CarMax instead of having to private party sale, deal with meeting buyers, communicate with flakers, etc.

Yes, you can usually get more for private sale, but at least in my experience, the price CarMax gives you is higher than what the dealer would give you in trade.

Since I lease most of my vehicles, I actually end up positive because the price they give me is usually higher than the lease buyout and I use that amount as money back or to buy down the money factor or reduce the cap cost.

It may not work for everyone or all cars, but it has for me in the 3 times I've gone there (one truck, two minivans)... although in all 3 cases, I ended up not selling to CarMax because the dealer would match or go higher (actually, on one of the minivans, the dealer was about $200 higher than CarMax).

You say CarMax is better but then the dealer was actually higher.

You should just ask the dealer for their BEST AND FINAL offer.  Saves you the run around.

In 1 case out of 3, the dealer was higher.

I like going to CarMax to have it appraised because you just set an appointment, wait around for half an hour and they give you a printed sheet with the buy price.

I do that before I go to a dealership after I've finalized price and terms of the new car with the dealer via email/phone. So then when the dealer appraises the trade, I have something to compare to. The first time, the dealer was higher, so no brainer. The next 2 times, CarMax was higher and the dealer just decided to match instead of me taking my trade back to CarMax.

So no run around... but yeah, maybe I should ask them for BEST AND FINAL before showing them what CarMax would give me as they might offer more.

We?ve gotten quotes from Carmax twice. On a Bmw and Mercedes, both times they gave us the same quote as the dealer. First time we traded it in. The second time did a private sale and got $3k higher than the carmax/dealer quote. We lucked out and sold it to the first person that came to drive it. So pretty hassle free.

Here we are one year later and we have an official announcement by Tesla on their new roadster. I think it looks much better than the CGI render. More McLaren than Maserati. The numbers sound crazy: 0-60 in 1.9 seconds, Quarter mile in 8.9 seconds, top speed of over 250 mph, 600+ mile range, and only $200K. Paris, you better get ready to trade in your German muscle car.

I must say, this Tesla Model S Coupe is a pretty good looking car.  To bad its not official and its only a design rendering.

Wow that Tesla does look really nice...when are they planning to come out with it?

It's a photoshop of the Gen 1 Tesla Model S.  I agree that they should either revive their original Roadster lineup, or maybe create a new coupe on the upcoming Model 3 platform.  Maybe that was Elon's plan all along, get a mass market EV out to the public and start making more compelling and fun EV cars

I picked up a 2018 Cayenne Platinum Edition at the end of October but will be selling it in early Jan.  The car will have less than 1,000 miles on it if anyone is interested.  I'll snap a few pictures of it when I get back into town.

No, bought it mainly for the Section 179 and bonus depreciation write-off so I can move 2017 income to 2018.  It's nice and cushy but just too big for me...I have a Macan S coming that I'll lease in Jan.

Won't there be a huge hit on the depreciation of the car's value?  Are you really saving that much in income tax after everything is said and done?

Macan S is sweet.

The only thing you're missing now is to get a real email address besides yahoo :)

Big deal. I've driven 3 minivans in a row.

Top that!!!
