Laguna Altura is zoned to University High

Do any kids take buses to schools anymore?  I took a bus all the way to high school.  I never see buses in Irvine.  Do all the parents just drop off and pick up their kids in Irvine?  I thought school districts were mandated to provide transportation to schools that were too far to walk.

There are buses but most of the time just a few kids riding the buses. Schools must have several traffic egresses or the traffic impact and the lack of vehicular stacking could be very dangerous to residents living close to the schools. Regularly cops are needed to enforce traffic to preventing the desperate parents from making illegal turns. Pioneer is one of such school being a detriment to local traffic during the morning and afternoon.

Thanks to budget cuts, there is a very limited amount of bus service in the district.

It also costs $370 + processing fee for a child per year if the family makes over $20k/yr. See: Fee Schedule

There are only 3 schools in the district that are served (possibly more for special needs kids, would need to check): Rancho Middle School, Turtle Rock Elementary, and Vista Verde. Of those, there are only select pick-up areas. See: Bus Stop Schedule

Dayum, you have to pay for bus service in Irvine if you make more than 20k/yr???  I didn't know this.  Taking the bus to school is a rite of passage for students.  What are CA public schools gonna do next...40/1 student to teacher ratio?  ;)

Yup, and for the Irvine homes served by Tustin Unified, the picture isn't any brighter.

A pass costs $410. There are four schools served, however none of them are schools of residency for Irvine homes.
See: TUSD Transportation Info

This is one reason I picked Foothill Ranch. The elementary is walking distance. The multiple bus stops for middle school are even closer. It is on a first-come, first-served basis, however.

Thanks for posting this info. It's very interesting that out of so many schools in Irvine, only the three schools that serve UCI have buses. Is it because this is the only part of the city that people (such as UCI students) don't necessarily need cars to go to school and work/do shopping? I'm just trying to guess since this seemed like such an anomaly.

@nova:

I think that's part of it.

Rancho San Joaquin services the Turtles, Quail and even University Hills behind UCI... which are all not close to RSJ. I recall when out walking it the morning up at QH, kids gathering up at the corner of a park to get on a bus.

But... I do think there is bus service to every school... as I've seen buses at the various Elems not listed above.
