Based on this thread, you can tell there is a distinct lack of objective data for the public to judge the quality of a physician/surgeon. The data exists and is accessible by insurance companies, hospitals, and the federal government.
Some of quality related data is now becoming available to the public via the Medicare website:
1) Hospital Compare
http://www.medicare.gov/hospitalcompare/search.html
2) Physician Compare**
http://www.medicare.gov/physiciancompare/search.html
**This site does not have individual physician data yet, but it will in the future.
As a patient you should ask:
1) What is your background/education/certifications?
2) How many of these procedures have you performed?
3) What is your complication rate? (i.e. what % of your surgical cases end up having problems)
4) What are the risks, benefit, and alternatives of the procedure?
5) Have you been sued before? How many malpractice claims have been filed against you? For what amount did you settle or have a judgement placed against you?**
**This is one you'd like have but is only available to lawyers and health care organizations/government agencies via The National Practitioner Data Bank
