Irvine House Raffle is back again...

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Yeah, they shouldn't allow crinkled or folded tickets. I know just the right fold to make it stick-up and easy to grab.

You either do them all that way or none of them.

Yeah, I also agree that is a lil fishy on who won. Not that she did anything wrong...it was a physical pick.

But, the worst thing about those raffles is the odds. 1 out of 10k.

I actually think this is the best thing about those raffles. 1 out of 10k isn't that bad. It's a lot better odds than the state lottery.

I see lawsuits coming...and then she'll probably have to give the house back!

Hm, you may be right. From the OC Register:

"The winner of the home raffled off by the Irvine Public Schools Foundation is the sister of the woman who came up with the idea of the house raffle in the first place."

Irvine House Raffle: All in the Family

There's no issue currently...until someone makes it an issue by a lawsuit.

I dont have the official rules but the register states a little clip...although household means living under one roof AND in the immediate family

of the foundation board or staff? or is it referring to immediate family period.

"Offical rules state that the winner can?t be in the immediate household of anyone on the foundation?s board or staff, etc. etc."

[quote author="Astute Observer" date=1219235696]It is a lot better than throwing your money away, for sure.

Only the mathematically challenged people buy lotto and raffle. Sorry.

Well, this mathematically challenged person won $10,000 in last year's Irvine Housing Raffle. :-P

Homes aren't worth anything and neither is cash. So I want something else.

I wonder if this is going to be the solution for the realtors to clear inventory, e.g. sell one at a time using a raffle. I wonder if they get commission?

Lots of comments on the OC Register story. I thought this one was interesting:

Tustin Monkey Says:

August 21st, 2008 at 9:22 am

I was there with my family the day of the raffle and we all left saying,

?Was that for real?? We were sitting about 10 feet away from Donna when

she won. We all made three observations that didn?t look to kosher to

all of us. When this story came out today we were weren?t that shocked.

#1

The ticket was drawn and put into a manila envelope. Then it was held

for about 10 minutes. Then they drew her name from it. They could have

easily had two tickets in there and pulled the one they wanted. For

everyone who bought these tickets they should have had a seperate barrel

and drawn it only for the house and read it right then and there in

front of everyone. We overheard a few people complaining about the

envelope deal.

#2

Out of the 50 or so prizes given out only two people were present. (That

I saw) Donna was one.

#3

Right after they called her name, a woman sitting next to her ran to the

guy who was selling drinks for the event and was loudly whispering

?Donna won. Donna got it!?

We've entered multiple times ever since they started this few years back. Every events we went to see the drawing seems somewhat fishy. I'd love to see some investigation into this. But then again it looks like Irvine PD is it in with them.

[quote author="Astute Observer" date=1219496349]skeptic111, where did you find the comments in OCR? I looked at three links there, but none of them have any comment related to how the raffle was executed. Do you have the link handy? TIA.

I was not there, but this is one of the dumbest thing any raffle organizer can do. Talking about transparency there. Maybe they should ask one of those magicians to do the drawing to add more festivity to the event. Geeze

7th comment from the bottom.

I know someone with the PR firm handling the raffle... "no comment" was her response when trying to get the 'real info'.

That comment could go either way.

In order to work for a PR Firm, the first task they have you do is recite the words "No Comment."

Anyone know if they're doing the raffle this year? It's usually announced by January.

I guess maybe last year's "scandal" put a lid on it...

I just emailed the director of the program.

I'll post a response if I hear anything.

Here is an update on the Irvine Housing Raffle as of 2/9/09:

The Irvine Housing Raffle will kick off on March 9.

I was told that if you have bought a ticket in the past,

you will receive a mailer as well as an email blast when they kick off.

Somewhere in Irvine at a T intersection with an address full of "4"s and the toilet is directly over the entry.

4 = hissing death.

[quote author="SoCal78" date=1234229735]CalGal - how many tickets did you buy in the raffle where you won ten grand?

Just one ticket.

We had to share the ticket with Uncle Sam.

Uncle Sam got about $4k and we got around $6k. :shut:

(maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration - I can't remember the exact amount, but Uncle Sam takes quite a bit out for winnings.)
