How Safe Are We As Realtors???

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Simply put: defending yourself is a basic HUMAN right. And every human being must be vigilant to defend themselves against ALL crimes. And I mean "all crimes" because as human beings we face the same threats. Absolutely(!) do I agree the type and/or frequency of threats may be different between genders, but you must agree that violent crime is heinous no matter what the gender.

So, yes, do everything it takes to minimize risk by arming yourself with self-defense classes, tazers, sprays, witnesses, daylight, body armor, the knowledge to not be exposed to vulnerable situation, or whatever you have to in order to feel comfortable, but there's no need to make this topic a man vs. woman thing. The topic stands on its own very well. Evil people are evil and they come in all shapes, sizes, races, genders, religions, etc... This all seems so clear to me, I am appalled by those resorting to name calling, those making assumptions about me, and otherwise emotional responses. Sheesh.

In the late 1980s in the IE there was a period of time that 2 different people were attacking female agents who were in presale trailers for new home communities. This was pre cell phone era and often the temporary phone lines didnt work. These guys knew that women were alone in a fairly remote location.

As I recall, 3 or 4 female agents were beaten, raped and robbed. One of the individauls was apprehended. As a VP of Sales & Marketing I hired armed guards for a period of time to remain by the trailer during business hours as well as having the superintendents stop by the trailers.

As a routine I had the agents open the front door and yell out "Models are being locked", rather than go into the models alone prior to locking and setting the alarms. This was due to several instances of people hiding in the models and approaching the agents while locking up.

In the state where I now live most female, and many male, agents carry firearms. One agent I know writes off her weapon as a business expense. The state is very liberal in regards to CCW permits so it is legal. I would never show one of my rentals unarmed.

It is always risky to meet strangers or let them into your home. I stated this in another thread here and a couple of people thought I was using Realtor scare tatics.

I was speaking from experience.

Hear me now-believe me later!

Enjoy

<p><em>"In the state where I now live most female, and many male, agents carry firearms".</em></p>

<p>I don't believe this for a second.</p>

<p>And Adam......poor, poor Adam. Just take a few more Prozac, it will all be better in a little while. </p>

Awgee - Concur, except I would qualify that they should only be treated differently when the physical difference actually matters. Everything else is social construct.

ZVillegas - I would approach it the same way one might approach online dating. Meet in a public place, tell people where you're going and who you're meeting. If possible, get an intern or form a group of colleagues that you trust to take turns coming with each other to appointments. Sadly, if there is no one but you and the potential client in your office at the same time, it's not any safer, other than you know where the envelope opener is. Also, sign up for self defense course (and, like it or not, the only ones I have seen advertised are <em>women's</em> self defense courses). I would also suggest thinking about what you wear. If possible skip the skirt and heels and wear clothing you can run and kick in.

Adam . . . I don't have time to get into it now, but I have a response for you as well. I think you and I agree on 90%+ plus here, but I would like to point out a few areas where I think your argument is incorrect. I have to say, though, it was pretty funny for you to rant on sexism while you proceeded to tell a woman how she needed to phrase her question. Think about that for a minute.

Oooo, and I was so close! Seriously, I almost commented a couple days ago on the Suze thread about how much I used to love watching her show when I first started learning about personal finance and how over time I began to sour after picking up on some of her male bashing quips. Thankfully, I was ready to move on from her teachings of the "basics" before it drove me nuts, so I still have a fondness (but somewhat cautious) attitude about her.

Anyway, your point has been taken! I can totally see how my comments here today came off as "some man telling some woman what to do" and honestly that was not my intention at all. In fact, I didn't even see it that way and now suddenly it becomes clear to me why everyone became so defensive so quickly. I can be dumb like that and trust me, if you knew me, that isn't my MO. :-)

men and women are not equal, and our relationships would benefit greatly if we realized this. Whether you believe in creation or evolution or some quasi-combo of the two, we are created equal and should be treated equally, but we are definitely unique.

realtors, carry tasers.

<p>Eva - I would suggest that the physical differences possible produce some profound emotional differences, generally speaking.</p>

<p>Personally I am glad for the emotional differences, because without my wife's greater emotional "intelligence", I would have screwed up our marriage a long time ago.</p>

Good morning Trooper

"In the state where I now live most female, and many male, agents carry firearms".

"I don't believe this for a second."

What facts do you base your "not believing" me on?

This is in small communities in the mountains of Northern Arizona. I am completeing the required hours for a Brokers License and had 6 other people in the class.

5 of them normally carry while showing property. One is a retired LEO. Often they show raw land in somewhat remote areas. This is not an "urban" area.

I spend at least one hour a week at a local indoor range and also attend a weekly competitive shooting night where 9 to 13 people show up. Of these people at least 5 are working agents.

This is a small population but representative, as I am told, by those in the business. Maybe I should have said "many" rather than "most."

Just a note, I have an Arizona CCW and a non resident Utah CCW and can carry in approxitmatley 30 states based on reciprical agreements. Of course California is not one of them.

I am not trying to be argumentative but wondered what your facts were for the disbelief of my statement or why you would challange it without facts.

Have a great day!

<p>Arrest Made In Rape, Stabbing Of Real Estate Agent</p>

<p>CORONA, Calif. Authorities say a real estate agent was raped and repeatedly stabbed by a man she was showing a vacant home in Corona. </p>

Anonymous,

Thanks for the article. I didn't get a chance to watch TV this weekend. But I saw that story flashed over the screen as I walked out the door.

Well, this is an old comment, but I find it very easy to believe that a significant number of real estate agents in rural Arizona carry firearms. The 2nd amendment is alive and well in Arizona.

<p>Winex</p>

<p>Oh yeaa!! One of the reasons that I moved to AZ from SoCal. I had some run ins with the DMV over cars and hot rods as well as not being able to carry weapons.</p>

<p>I have a street legal ATV here that I can ride downtown without a helmet while carring a weapon. Firearms are a big part of the history of this area. At first it does seem strange to go into a store and see a gun on someones hip. It is legal to carry exposed without a permit but I do not think that is a good idea.</p>

<p>Good life for sure!</p>

<p> </p>

<p>Regards</p>

I remember when I first started hearing about CCW permits in other states. I wondered what the big deal was. Why can't everyone just carry their weapons in plain site? (I moved to Arizona when I was 16, so I naturally assumed that the rest of the country respected the Constitution)

<p>I prefer the Wolf in Sheep's clothing. My two favorite being a little Sig and a Compact 1911. </p>

<p>Winex, respected the constitution? HA! Not in the PRoK (People's Republic of Kalifornia). But I am happy to report that in the OC there is at least a Shall Issue for CCW, where as in LA and SD its a fat chance to even get issued.... </p>

<p>As far as this RE agent, I would recommend reading <a href="http://www.corneredcat.com">www.corneredcat.com</a>. If you so desire, it is an option. </p>

<p>good luck</p>
