My parents and I came to the US from Europe back in 1980. We didn't have much money at all, but in 1985 my parents bought their home with 20% down. We lived in a 2-bedroom apartment with my aunt and her family for a few years and then moved out to a 2-bedroom apartment where just the 3 of us lived. My parents worked their regular jobs during the day and working nights cleaning offices 6 nights a week for 4 years. So my vote is for hard work and being cost conscious.
