Just had our house cleaned by a maid for the first time, it was $200 for the initial visit, two cleaning ladies from 8-2, it was initially $150 but then we got offered $50 to clean the windows as well.  We thought it was a good deal.  The lady also cleans at least two of my neighbors for many years, so it was a fairly easy vetting process.  After the initial visit deep cleaning, each visit will be $70 for 5 bed/4 bath house.  Bought them breakfast and lunch.  Windows weren't streak free/OCD clean but for $50, it was a no brainer.  Had them use our vacuum instead of theirs.  Prepping for the maids took a lot of work as well, another incentive to having a cleaning service:  you end up de-cluttering monthly in order to get the most bang for the buck for your $70!
That's one of my nitpicks... why do we have to clean before the cleaner comes?

Interesting that you fed them, are you going to do that every time?

We pay more than that on a smaller house so that makes me wonder if we are overpaying. It's not an official licensed service either, just someone from people we know so she is trustworthy.

The one we used to have was less but she kept breaking things and not owning up to it. One time she broke a faucet and didn't tell us and I discovered it leaking and had to replace the faucet cartridge.

Thanks IHO, you're the unofficial moderator for TI.  As for feeding them, it was simple, just bagels and pizza, it was also what we were eating.  Hopefully they're not diabetic, as it would be carb overload.  And more calories equal work harder, right?  I'll give them some 5 hr energy drinks next time :)

The main thing for hiring a maid is trust:  remember she gets to go through all your "dirty laundry" and the entire house will be exposed, including what security you have (oooohh, they have a stick in the sliding door rails, forget that house!), and whatever valuables you happen to lay out.  If anything happens at least she'll know that she'll lose my two neighbors as customers as well.  But if we keep it at once per month, it will be hard for them to pick up any of our life patterns and we can plan vacations easier as well.

Yeah, it was mostly de-cluttering, moving stuff away from windows and off floors so they can do a good cleaning, still requires a lot of work though.  It was nice to see my counter tops again.  We'll see how this goes, will be a nice change to be able to find stuff around the house.  Wife asked me "where's that packet of blue card stock I bought?" and I knew exactly where it was!

Wow, I have a 5 bed, 4 bath home and I pay $120 every three weeks.  $70 is a steal.

Do you have shutters?  If so, is wiping the shutters down included?  Also, do they take care of the dishes?  I pay $80/month for a 4/3 and they don't do either of these.

I have falling apart ten year old blinds, they wiped it down during the initial cleaning, not sure if it would continue during the regular monthly cleanings.  They did not do any dishes, I'll ask them next time, it's something I don't mind doing myself.  So vacuum, swifter floors, wipe down baseboards, clean micro and oven, de greased my stove top, and even cleaned out my $20 toaster oven.  All bathrooms cleaned.

So have TI folks compiled a list of trust worthy cleaning folks?  I'm feeling the need to bite the bullet and go in this market.

Sarcasm? Typo? $120 / 3 = $40 per week. $40 < $70.

Maids generally charge more if you schedule service less frequently.  For price comparison, it makes sense to state how often your maid comes.  $120 is per cleaning session.

PS9,
You have to pay these poor cleaning people at least a $100 bucks for a 5 bed / 4bath.

$70 for 6 hours / 2 cleaning people = $5.83/hour. This would hardly cover their gas cost. $100 bucks without feeding them. I am sure that they would not have fired you..... and this is California for crying out loud where gas is $5 per gallon.

This is a funny thread :)

Our maid fired us after the first visit :(

Think we got way under quoted, I think
So you fed them and they fired you?

Are you sure there wasn't squid or octopus in those bagels/pizza?

Yes, I'd like to see this list too.  I currently have a 3 bedroom/2.5 bath and I'm paying $100 every other week.  Also the cleaning crew wears their shoes while their inside my house so that to me defeats the purpose.

I'm looking to switch.

ZeroLot,

Ok, unlike Ps9, you are now paying too much for $100 every other week for a 3 bed / 2.5 bath. :)

just curious what you guys think is a fair rate? i think cleaning services (legal businesses such as molly maids etc) charge $25-$30 per hour? i think for an independent $20/hour is pretty fair, especially when you supply all the cleaning supplies.

@ps9:

So did you end up hiring new people?

And was the $70 per visit a weekly or bi-weekly charge?

I think we currently do $90 bi-weekly.

Nope, back to clutter filled days, we were quoted $70 per visit, once per month.  They clean two of my neighbors homes, left about 3 msgs, never a call back
