I was volunteering in Santa Ana a few weeks ago and I hear that the Orange County rescue mission is going to build a 4 acre homeless community on RedHill, less than 5 miles away from all those new homes. I drove down RedHill and saw the sign for the Villages of Hope.

Half a million dollars to be next door to a homeless shelter...

Its actually less than three miles... http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&rmm=1&un=m&cl=EN&qq=1ADqpk24ofDBwoSNX9ghaE3Sv8iHPUx3jyxgTrFDpf2GqENEAjYX0%252fzJCvAylfp3AJ2ZksVOUWhTiKhz21vY2sN5tXFEczlIKFjioh%252bStu6sXT2%252bBfNg%252bj2nMt6DPCoBC2%252buUxhJIrx3Kr%252bcfD29rNxcRlJ6RwaH1Ne%252bofy25XiOkKA5ozgJiNmWph8Qs5Mkvxw06ludzBPOnN0zUbJ933iLp%252f9vG9JXSgoUHIMjnTAatXt5aOFBcFVbLunluHtD7frOAHvyjtJ%252f1L73E4X8w4PVkQNzIfWNIP9MxD5zmrl0ZAIKmCne2SlZTAW0EnUS&ct=NA&rsres=1&1y=US&1ffi=&1l=&1g=&1pl=&1v=&1n=&1pn=&1a=JAMBOREE+RD+%26+EDINGER+AVE&1c=TUSTIN&1s=CA&1z=92780&panelbtn=1&2y=US&2ffi=&2l=5qwf%252fzAdDoCBE8ZrrC6Ecw%253d%253d&2g=Wiw7PZ0zJW5LfLVGMqL3zg%253d%253d&2pl=&2v=INTERSECTION&2n=&2pn=&2a=Red+Hill+Ave+%26+Warner+Ave&2c=Tustin&2s=CA&2z=92780

and probably more along the lines of 2 miles... Probably won't affect home prices too much, but makes me reconsider buying there. There's a train on one side and a shelter on the other.

Cool, an opportunity to take my kids to show them what real service to your fellow man means ... (seriously)

If it's 5 miles away, how negatively is it going to really impact home values? It's not like it's LA Skid Row ...

don't forget the "mysterious" Irvine Inn at the end of warner ave before it connects to jamboree. online search came up with temporary affordable housing.. have a nice ring to it..

i wonder how an open house would go for those Lantana homes when you see those nice shiny Waste Management trucks parked right across from the canal..

If it's 5 miles away, how negatively is it going to really impact home values? It's not like it's LA Skid Row ...

Fraychielle. All I can say is, "If you build it, they will come". 'nuff said.

It's a shelter for homeless families, one of the very few in the county, not the union rescue mission on skid row. It's well maintained and well managed. Knowledge of its existence wouldn't affect properties values accept for the fact that some people are paranoid and afraid of minorities.

Wow your heart is so open and kind to those in need. One day the tables will be turned and wouldn't you love to run into someone just like yourself!

I donate to OC Rescue Mission and would not object to something like The Village of Hope being built in my neighborhood, provided that they're built to serve the local (OC) community. There are many OC families that has fallen on hard times, and programs like Village of Hope keep families together and help them get back on their feet.

I WOULD object if they built a large homeless shelter here to import homeless folks from skid row in downtown LA. Sorry, but I'm only generous to a certain point. The City of Los Angeles and its residents are responsible to look after their own.

Some of you folks are ridiculous, at a minimum the shelter would be 2 miles away!!!!!!! Manhattan beach is less than two miles away from Lawndale and Hawthorne and its proximity to those places didnt seem to hurt Manhattan Beach's value.

Really? People are concerned about what a homeless shelter will do to home values?

WTF?!? These people have NO HOME AT ALL and you have the gall to debate their impact on property value?!?! Where in the hell are your priorities? How priveledged a life do you think you deserve? And why does race matter... they are homeless *people*... so why does it matter if they are 'minorities' or bused in from LA. You think your OC tax dollars aren't being funneled into LA by the state?

Threads like this remind me of everything I hate about Orange County. Consider this in your property valuation: If the homeless have no where to go to get off the streets, how long before they come knocking on your door or stand on the corners of your on-ramps or camp out in your bus shelters.

Hey Trooper

How are you doing? So you are a NIMBY? You may want to join my new group:

CAVE It stands for Citizens Against Virtually Everything! LOL

Every one else can also join. Its free and is against all of the BS.

Enjoy and be safe!

Seriously, do you guys have anything else to worry about other than property values? I don't think the food banks in Newport drive down any home prices over there.

Besides, the homeless shelter is intended for women and children. I would love to volunteer some time there once it opens.

Columbus Square is not a bad place at all. In regards to the train tracks, they run through all of Irvine between Walnut and Irvine Center Drive, and I don't see a mass exodus of residents from that region of Irvine. As for the hangars, I personally think that they look awesome. The only problem is that there isn't much else on the base at this time.

I definitely have my eyes set on Columbus Grove though. My goal is to be living there within five years.

Hmm, a volunteer worrying about a homeless shelter bringing down property values. How ironic. Did you volunteer out of the kindness of your heart? Or was this court ordered community service?

Hahaha! Trooper, I was referring to the first post whereby "Shaqquitta" mentioned that s/he was volunteering in Santa Ana. Then out of the same breath was concerned with a homeless shelter bringing down the value of homes nearby.

I would think that someone who volunteers is more concern for their fellow man. Rather than property values.
