Green Homes or Communities in Irvine?

i was up in the sacramento area last weekend and visited some communities there to get a feel. comparable houses imho were probably about 200K cheaper at least up there but that's like comparing apples to oranges.

anyways..one community that i really liked touted that all their homes were environmental friendly. they used solar powers and other energy saving things around the house.

so i wanted to ask...

1. are there any green/solar power communities available in irvine?

2. i'm going to assume that buying a place in an existing community like woodbury, PS, or others you wouldn't even be allowed to install solar panels right?

btw...off topic...but...33,000 people or something on the waiting list for the chevy volt...so imagine if you had solar power in your house with the chevy volt....sweet! gas prices? what gas prices?

the solar rights act prohibits HOA's to stop you from installing solar panels (they can only make design changes to up to $2000.- in cost difference). i am in the process of doing so, sized big enough to supply power for an electric car.

I know Ladera Ranch is not irvine, but I do remember seeing some model homes that had solar panels installed and wired to the main grid. They had a meter showing how much was being generated by solar, and how much your house was feeding back into the grid.

flmgrp, would you care to share your story as it progresses? I'd like to see how much this cost and what your experience was like. Thanks.

my system costs about $23k after rebates and is projected to produce around 500kwh a months offsetting my entire energy usage of about 450kwh.

however my HOA was stupid enough and turned down my appliaction, they can be fined up to $1000 for doing so. by law they can not prevent a solar installation even on condos, townhomes (shared community property)...

they also turned down a tiny 5x5 inch vent needed for my NGV home fueling station ! if i can not install this unit i will not be able to continue using the greenest car on earth (the honda civic gx)

it is a shame that in 2008 - where everyone is talking about saving the enviroment, going green, conserving resources - there is an HOA that is blind and stupid and is trying to stop me from beeing "green"

on both cases i will not give up until i get approval (if needed media etc will be involved)

it's not that i am trying to put a 10 foot satellite dish on my roof !!

wow, which area do you live in? I cannot believe that they are prohibiting a 5x5 vent. is it any different than a clothes dryer vent?

who do you have to contact about the fine? does the state atty general do that?

I'm very interested in that car. Oil change every 10,000 miles and tune-up every 100k miles?

However, I won't buy it until I get a SFR with sufficient space to install the recharger, preferably outdoors.

1. This is why I'll never live somewhere there is an HOA or neighborhood rules.

2. LEED is a huge joke.

I think the same way, but then have you been reading the story about gold house in La Palma? retroactive prohibitions coming soon to a neighborhood near you!

have no interest in that at this point. i don't want to make any trouble, i don't want any enemy's i just want to make our world a greener place

Yeah, you could always hide it as a dryer looking vent.

yes, but the city i live in won't give me the final permit unless i have approval from the HOA

i aggree with a lot of HOA rulings, i am glad my neighbour can't paint his house green or put five dishes on the roof or make his backyard a dumpster, in my case we are talking about a 5x5 inch vent

yep 20k miles on it and my tailpipe looks like new. even in a SFR you might run into HOA problems... fueling inside is fine, doesn't take away any garage space, but outside fueling is twice as fast

If you need outside fueling and not garage fueling then see if you can find a way to hide it or camouflage it. Any link to what it looks like?

nahh i'm in a townhouse, so no "own" yard. i'm stuck with the indoor unit. which is fine with me. all i need is that vent approval :shut:
