Did you come across any research on how this affects the pipes in general? (for positive or negative?) 

I know that many south county areas are having issues with pin hole leaks and slab leaks.  Developers are blaming the water and additives and the water company is blaming cheap copper during construction.

Edit:  I just flipped a couple channels and came across Nuvo h2o systems, haha.  10% of the cost of other systems.  You can even cut your water consumption by 75%! (Because you get 1 gallon output for 1 gallon input versus other things that are 4 gallons input and 1 gallon output.)

Use less detergent in the dishwasher, laundry, and even less shampoo?  Check

They say some mysterious magical ingredient can last 6 months yet contain enough to continuously bond to "lime and scale" without specifying which minerals it will help with specifically.

That sounds really fishy... And Amazon reviewers have lots of 1-stars to say about it.

As far as pinholes in pipes, we are in a new home which has that new-age plastic plumbing and is supposed to be impervious to pinhole leaks. I've heard from guys in construction that pinhole pipes in copper are just happening in some areas due to the water and/or pipes, not due to any additives.

that nuvo water is a scam, basically, as i read the reports.  less effective than salts, more likely to damage pipes.  just uses citric acid to loosely chelate the calcium.

and the nuvo company is a bad actor, apparently.
