Kinda cool, he has a door casing so he could have just bought a cheapo door, but I can appreciate the desire to DIY.  Unless you are being sarcastic, then yeah, this sucks  8)

Why pay $1K plus to someone else when you can easily do this yourself with some elbow grease and trips to Home Depot?

Not to mention the pride and memories you will have forever...

My nephew made his own for an older home he's been fixing up. He's not a carpenter (he's a grease monkey so probably pretty strong).

He said the hardest part was picking the stain. He stained a few samples before deciding which to go with.

This looks really cool. Can we paint the wood with desired color to match walls? Has anyone installed something like this and how much would it cost for a contractor to do it (or may be Home depot person)?
Also, how safe are these barn doors with toddlers and infants at home? The heavy sliding doors always scare me when babies are around.

I've seen some with the empty core doors so that it's lighter (easier to move) and safer.
