I think woodburyowner have a good crown molding guy,  hopes he can gave you some info.http://www.talkirvine.com/index.php/topic,2765.msg51676.html#msg51676

Crown molding are definitely expensive.  I just have crown molding done in my conservatory by my flooring contractor. I don't have the price with me right now but I think it is around $1300 just for a small 12x12 room.

Crown Molding is actually pretty cheap.  I paid $4.25 or something per linear foot.  So a 12x12 room would only cost around $200.  @Bones, I sent you a PM with the info.

Oh shoot, should have ask you about it before getting my done.  >:(

Edit:  I just double check my invoice, my was actually $640, but still more expensive than woodburyowner's.  The $1300 probably was the IP's price.

I know OpenSky thinks crown molding is passe, but we are thinking about doing it downstairs in the great room and maybe in the upstairs master.  I talked to one wood guy and he quoted me $2000-2500 just for labor alone.  That cost doesn't include materials (which is cheap) or the painting of the molding (which may or may not be cheap).  Does this price sound reasonable?  Seems kinda steep to me.

I'm hoping someone (ahem Zerolot) has done some research on this recently ;)

Crown Molding should be cheap but it comes down to how many inches you want.  At Marigold, 6" of crown molding is included in all the rooms downstairs.

Some painters will install crown molding for you.  I was thinking about installing some in the master bedroom but decided to paint the ceiling instead.  So if you are planning to paint your house anyway, ask your painter for an estimate.  Otherwise a regular handyman can install crown molding if you are willing to pay for it first at the hardwood store.  :)

I did get a quote from a general contractor who was willing to install 6" crown molding upstairs AND downstairs for me for $2000.  But once I told him my downstairs already comes with crown molding he got disappointed.

Inc's price of $640 sounds about right.  IP over charges for crown molding.

Giant baseboards FTW.

Crown molding only if the room has right angles all around. Outside of that, sorta smacks of 2003.

Kinda like the beige/butter/taupe tones vs. the grayscale palette that is the current hotness.

Prepare to gouge your eyes out:

Nice!

Without mention of linear footage, doing a price comparison doesn't really mean much. Crown molding is quoted in price per linear foot. The contractors that try to give you a total dollar amount without providing the linear footage are usually trying to pull a fast one.

We had our 5.25" crown molding done which included (material, labor/installation, and painting) for around $4.25 or $4.50 per square foot. I shopped around quite a bit and that was the lowest rate I was able to get for painted crown.

I'm also interested in adding some crown moldings to my bedroom and bathroom.  Everywhere else , the home has crown moldings and it really makes the home pop.  What I can't seem to fathom is why it is so expensive?  It's just a piece of strip of wood, cut across to produce some curves and is entirely just wood.  $3-4 a linear foot is absurdly expensive.  I think China should be able to make them for less than $1 since you can do that with laminate already.

Painting?  I think painting crown moldings is as easy as painting the base boards, especially when they're not mounted yet.  I would paint it and install it myself.  You just nail it with a 2 inch nail into the stud I presume, then seal it with caulk.

You don't need to nail it to a stud since MDF is very light.  I think $4-5/linear ft installed is a great deal.  It is very labor intensive and the margin of error when cutting and installing is small.

I watched my contractor install the baseboards and crown molding and it did not look easy at all.  It is a highly skilled trade and I wouldn't trust just anyone to do it.

I have to agree. First try one room and see how it turns out. There are many YouTube videos/guides on the web.

Same thing goes with painting a bedroom or bathroom. I would paint the room myself. Why pay an arm and a leg when you can do it your self.

A lot of folks here don't believe in others making a living. They believe services should just be cost plus 1%.

I wonder about this when it comes to gardener services.

The guy I used to have, was $45 a month and he would come twice month and spends about half an hour on my yard... so that works out roughly to $45/hr but he brings one other guy so let's call it $22/hr.

My new guys comes every week for $60 a month but he's there usually an hour (he's solo and more thorough so it takes longer). So that's $15 an hour. While I'm getting better service because he comes every week, I feel bad because I'm paying him less and he's doing it by himself.

And then when you compare it to our housecleaner, she spends up to 4 hours but I think we pay her $95 per visit (or something like that, my wife tends to not tell me that because I think our cleaner is overpaid). So she makes more than our gardener.

Should I not worry about the time component? Am I paying my gardener enough? Am I overpaying our housecleaner?

Maybe I should start a new thread for this.
