COX is ripping me off...and what can I do about it?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program

My fun recent Cox experience...

Got a new HDTV, called Cox to turn on the HD channel package. Only a handful of them went on, others (like the ESPNs, the main reason I wanted the package) didn't. Called and did the waste-of-time reset your box thing automatically, didn't work. Called again and talked to a few different tech people, they had no reason why it was wrong after going through the same steps manually that I had just done. Finally, one suggested I call the sales dept about my account because they had no answer (apparently they don't have access to that part of your account in the tech dept). The next person I talked to said sure enough, whoever I called to activate the HD channels had only turned a few on. They hit a couple buttons and all was fixed.

1 hour of my life gone, HD channels finally on.

Also, anyone know what the status is on these supposed new HD channels they're launching? It says on their Web site that some are already available in certain areas (like Aliso, Ladera, Laguna Niguel). Well, I've been to someone's house in one of those cities, and they don't have the channels yet either.

According to Cox. Here are the new HD channels.

KCOP HD 713

National Geographic HD 790

FSN HD 763

Starz West HD 781

Cinemax West HD 724

A&E HD 767.

Nobody I know has them yet. "Coming Soon" means something to Cox. Like within a year ??? Time to raise the rates too.

I need to make those "Digital Max" Range Shooting Targets. I bet Cox would send me a "cease and disist" letter if I do.

In case anyone cares, here's a list of DirecTV HD channels:

http://www.directv.com/hdchannels

ISM, can you pick disney channel via the HD ear?

It requires an upgrade called a Season Pass and then it comes in 2020 interactive.

jwbrown77 - you made me very mad by showing that list I was at someone's house recently and couldn't believe how many more HD stations they have with DirecTV. Interesting how now DirecTV is putting some of its HD channels right next to the regular feed in its lineup, instead of having separate rows of HD channels - for instance, HGTV is 223 or something, and HGTVHD is 223-1. With Cox, you've got all the HD channels in the 700s. I remember when DirecTV first was adding HD, the channels in the 70s were HD, and the regular channels were higher.

Why couldn't they pre-wire these new homes and apartments for Satellite TV's? Or do they, and I just don't know about it?

Most homes are wired for cable, which works to some degree. You need to have the satellite feed into your cable access panel, then it'll feed out to the rooms with receivers. The problem with satellite is that you cannot simply insert a splitter to get another line. Coax cables have to either come directly off the dish itself or go through a multiplexer. I see many homes with just one cable connection. With DVR's many require 2 connections, and with DirecTV or Dish, you can't split that one line into two, you have have a second cable run back to the distribution panel.

Cox. Get those new HD channels "Turned On" or the blue guy gets ruffed up bad. !!!

That's a really good idea for DirecTV to group them with a "-1" or "-HD" or what not. They should be next to their normal counterparts.

Bubblegum,

Thanks for that explanation. Now I remember the whole tuner requirement. The big HD tv we have downstairs has a built-in tuner, but we cheaped out with the little one upstairs and this is the one I wanna use with the antenna. Damned, damned...

And yes I bought the Enterprise-lookalike antenna

If you subscribe to the "HD Expanded Tier" on Cox, here is a way to save $4.95 a month off your bill. I got a call from Cox a couple of weeks ago, telling me they were switching ESPN-HD and ESPN2-HD to the free HD tier. They were adding HDNet and HDNet Movies to the expanded tier to replace the ESPN channels. I could continue to receive "all the expanded tier channels" at no increase in price if I authorized it. What they didn't tell me was that "all the expanded tier channels" consisted ONLY of these two HDNet channels. So if you don't tell them otherwise, you will be paying $4.95 extra, for only these two channels. HDNet has such things as Dan Rather news specials and the HDNet Movie channel debuts "Hoosiers" this month. I think I can struggle on without them.

Caliguy -

Check this website;

http://www.cox.com/ocpv/hdtv/new.asp

It will tell you when your area will be getting all of the Cox HD channels. I live in Aliso Viejo, basically only watch the HD channels, and know that I do in fact get all the channels on that list, including the NFL HD channel.

Thanks AV Paperboy - Are all the HD channels they're promoting active for you? Someone I know who lives in Laguna Niguel doesn't have these channels (but the last time I checked with him was a couple weeks ago, so it might have changed)

I have to take another look at my channels - I noticed a couple days ago they replaced Universal HD with HDNet. Hopefully that means my area (Irvine) will have everything soon. I hope.
