Also, Taiwanese/Asians tend to tone down strong flavors of western foods. HK Cafes do a great job of taking Western foods and making them more mild and generally more creamy.
Not sure if the locals are just used to the weather. I was there last week, and it was HOT, but what do they serve in the restaurant? Lukewarm water. All the Taiwanese people I was with just drank it up. I asked for a big bucket of ice to go with my water, everyone stared at me like I was crazy, and the older guests gave me a lecture about how it's not good to drink ice water. At another restaurant, after waiting in line for 30 mins outside at noon, sweating like a pig, they bring me hot tea and a bowl of piping hot miso soup. I almost died.
