Common Core Standards

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I really don't want to waste my time watching this...the 5 minutes or so I have spent on it have basically showed me an attack on Bill Gates and others.

Why Bill Gates would want to screw up our kids I don't know.  I have seen the common core cirriculum and it makes more sense to me that the traditional style.

If you are in favor of teaching kids to think for themselves and to apply what they have learned to situations they are unfamiliar with, then Common Core is attempting to do this. Sure everyone wants an objective multiple choice test to rank schools with, but this transition might help our students think a little bit more instead of sitting and waiting for the answer.

How many here have current 6th graders?

6th graders took the MSMAT in May.  This test was given to all 6th graders to see if they can test out of Common Core 7th grade math.  If that happens, they can then take the AAT test in a few weeks which will test them out of Common Core 8th grade math so that they can take Algebra in 7th grade.

The teachers in our school were saying that the bar was going to be set very high- and indeed it was.  Less than 2% passed the MSMAT at our elementary school.  There was one Chinese boy who was literally crying in class.  He is arguably the smartest kid in the 6th grade.  He already takes 7th grade math as a 6th grader, was a finalist at the state level for the science fair and is now competing at the national level.  He didn't pass the exam.

There were 5 sections and to pass the MSMAT, you have to pass all 5 sections.  Apparently the hardest section was probability.

I have spoken with parents who have called the district to make inquiries about next year's math.  There will not be clustering for the math classes.  Kids who did not do well at all on that test (did not pass any of the five sections) will be in the same class with kids who passed 4/5 sections- but didn't pass that test.

Anyone get results from their schools?

yup. this is exactly what happened. some school has no kids got passed that test.
great job IUSD by putting our kids at a great "advantage".
and there is rumor that there is a budget issue involved and they don't want more algebra kids in middle school.
if parents don't do anything before schools ends, it will be very difficult for them to undo the damage.

Students who did not pass the MSMAT can take the test again over the Summer.  This is a change from previous years where you only had one chance on the test.

unfortunately there is a reason why so many kids can not pass the test. it's not because kids are not good at math.
it is because the so called new standard and the way the test is designed and the way it is graded. nobody knows what they are looking for.
there is no text book decided yet and i don't think the teachers know what to prepare. they make a simple math problem a lot more complicated and you need to show some secret steps...
and you have to be above 83% on all 5 scoring areas.
Isn't this something reasonable to any of you ?
my kid has an overall 89% and just miss one point in one of the 5 areas in order to past this test.

So what kind of math test will fail 99% of the kids in IUSD ?
i have doubts about this common core before. now i am very sure it is just some BS designed by some idoit.

"A kid can?t just know that 12-9=3, they have to demonstrate their knowledge?by showing it 5?ways"

what a genius evolution we have in this country.

Just a heads up, school districts demanded we support Prop 30 to increase sales and income taxes in support of education funding. Now that the money has come in, they are not spending the money on our kids, but instead storing the money in excess of 20%.

The only money being spent is state/federal money allocated for Common Core training and technology, the rest is being stored and not going to our kids. We need to demand that the money raised directly by Prop 30 be spent as an investment for the students. Rainy day funds are important, but are recommended to be at 3%...not over 20%

Sentosa- did you call Jocelyn and reserve your child's spot for the next test date?  Which section did your child miss- probability?

One of my friends had a kid that didn't pass the exam either.  The kid was even taking that Avid math class.

Anyways- this mom called the district and asked if other school districts were also doing this test.  Jocelyn @ IUSD said no - only the Irvine school district is doing this.  Way to put the IUSD kids at a disadvantage.

abcd1234, my kid missed the expression & equation section. i have already registered her for the summer test.
but not knowing why so many kids fail the test makes me wonder if the problems lies with the test itself.

Wait...common core is both too difficult and dumb at the same time?

Common core implementation is an issue...the goals and thought process behind it are not.

Common core implementation is a huge issue- which really puts all the 6th graders at a huge disadvantage for determining their math path into high school.

They will be fine...seriously.  Kids are talking multi-variable calculus in high school these days.

When IUSD is the only district using this exam as the end-all be-all as the evaluation for a kid's ability to take Algebra or 8th grade math as a 7th grader, then I disagree.  My child is at a disadvantage to kids at Newport-Mesa, Tustin, etc school districts.

I don't think kids can be taking Calc BC if they don't pass this test.
