College ready or not?

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
I would say that this video should be more proof that we should send our kids to college.  But we just have to be smart about it.

I'm telling my kids they aren't going to a private college on my dime so if they want to go there they'll have to get a full ride (which won't happen).  I might pay for the portion that would be equivalent of a decent public university, however, and they'll have to fund the rest.  Good luck.  :P

I'm not talking about the Harvard and Yales of this world but some of those "other" private universities.  My school friends and peers at work proudly tell me they are sending their kids to "I never heard of them before" private U for $40 $50K per year.  Probably majoring in English or Psychology.  And graduating with $100K or more in student loans (Well, maybe not since it might be coming from the parents' retirement funds).  My sister will have paid for 11 total years of private college (almost no name colleges) for their two kids at about $50K per year per kid just for tuition.  They have the money so it doesn't really matter and their kids don't think anything of it.  Won't the UCIs or U or Arizona, U of Miami or equivalent do a similar job for a lot less?

"Laverne and Shirley" U impress anyone?

I can tell you this.  Most of my Analysts that came out were from IVY's... It's like a guaranteed job with a base pay of $80K and a signing bonus of $25k right off the bat.  I don't think we recruit from any UC's besides Cal.

That's just because you're part of one of those evil money driven industries and lack the appreciation in having an entire faculty program around a graduate study in Medieval Italian literature.

That may be true for some jobs like that and they were from IVYs right?

So, what are those guys joining Microsoft, Google and Yahoo straight out of public U with computer science degrees making?  $50K?  Not a chance.

Obviously, IVYs open up another world, and anyway people that can get into one of those colleges are much smarter than average to begin with.  I'm sure there are IVYs that graduated with BAs with a major in middle-eastern studies, now working for Walmart, and going to night school at UCI to get computer science degrees instead. :P

The growing trend nowadays is for American kids to attend university in Canada, Scotland, and England.

We're becoming the Mexicans of Canada.

Going outside the states has lots of advantages if you look it up online. Here is one article to get started:
U.S. Students Flocking to Study in Canada for Cheaper Fees as the Number Enrolled Doubled in Last 10 Years

Cheaper fees, prestigious institutions, streamlined application process, no silly admission essays, no letters of recommendation needed, different structure than American colleges i.e. math classes not required for art majors / get to focus on your major sooner.

An undergrad degree today is basically what a high school diploma was 30 years ago.  I got out of UCLA with my undergrad degree with less than $15k in student loans.  Hell, the cost of UCLA was slightly lower than what my parents paid for me to go to Mater Dei HS.  :D

yeah, you cant compare the ibanking world, the bank you were at in particular to the rest of the real world.  certain fields only hire from certain schools (for the most part). just like in the LA office of the big four accounting firms, if you want to a job there your chances of getting one as an accounting major increase significantly if you go to USC/UCLA.

UC Irvine cost about the same as Irvine pre-schools right now.
Yeah, I know it's gone up quite a bit since the late 90s when I went there.  Even the cost to attend Mater Dei has increased 4x since I went there.

Grooming my kids to be a movie star or a pro athelete... college is for suckahs!

I hear the marijuana business is thriving and doesn't require college either.

Plan B?

This is off topic, but I just thinking about a funny story.  There is a strip mall in Lake Forest with like 8 of those shops next door to each other.  It was all over the news a couple years ago.  I met one of the owners randomly at a Superbowl party a few years back, and he was bragging that he would be able to sell his business for at least $500,000, maybe even $1,000,000, eventually.  I told him I didn't think it was the best business model since selling marijuana is still illegal under Federal law.  He got all pissy at me and wouldn't look in my direction the rest of the party.
